Some cachers dread mystery/puzzle caches,
especially if it’s a cipher cache. I would like to attempt to
change cachers impression of these sort of caches by putting out a
series of cipher caches entitled “Cipher Caches Can Be Fun”. This
is the inaugural cache. The crypto puzzles I will put out will not
be terribly difficult as some of them in the genre tend to be. The
hints on these caches will make it easy to find the caches and
hopefully change your opinion of these types of caches.
Before we get to the puzzle, lets learn
some cipher terminology that will help you with deciphering the
puzzle. They are:
PLAIN TEXT – A message or text that has
NOT been enciphered.
CIPHER TEXT – A message or text that HAS
been enciphered and thus not readable.
KEY TEXT – This is a keyword, letter, or
phrase that is used to make ciphered text more difficult to
crack.
This cipher is called a "Caesar Cipher".
This type of cipher is one of the simplest and most used type of
encryption technique. It is a type of substitution cipher in which
each letter in the plain text is replaced by a letter some fixed
number of positions down the alphabet. To decipher or solve the
puzzle, it would be handy to have a pocket decoder or coin, but if
you do not have one of these, don’t sweat it, you can either use
several online decrypting web sites or you can take a look on the
picture of the decoder I have on this page. The "key" to solving
this type of cipher is to find out what the key text is.
To find this cache, decipher the
following:
YJCV AQW UGGM KU NQECVGF CV PQTVJ HQTVA
UGXGP VJKTVA fqv VJTGG HKHVA VJTGG YGUV QPG VYGPVA VYQ BGTQ UKZ
GKIJV VJKTVA VJTGG
The listed coordinates are trailhead
parking. It may not look like trail head parking, but it is, look
for the trailhead sign with the arrow pointing towards the
trailhead. The container is a scooba. To find the cache, YOUR FEET
DO NOT NEED TO LEAVE THE TRAIL AT ANY TIME. This is a day time only
cache. No night time caching. Do you want to know what you are
playing for as for FTF prizes? How about a Lincoln as in a 5 spot
not the car company.
