A beautiful start to a planned figure-eight exploration of the
ancient, deceased citizens of Cougar Mountain.
This micro in camo is easy to get to solely to lure the
unsuspecting geocacher into a false sense of security. Not usually
an explorer of the backwoods? Here's to changing that!
This is one of the biggest stumps I know in the park. Six feet in
diameter? 12 feet tall? How old? That's what always fascinates me
the most.
How could this not be one of my favorites? It's big, It's right on
the trail, and I have a relationship with it!
I don't really remember when I first met this hairy grandpa.
Probably four years ago, in a race, but it's also possible that it
was on a run alone. I definitely have known and appreciated it for
a long while. And I had an interesting experience with it just last
week.
I was running through the park on a rainy Wednesday evening,
glasses fogged, dogging it down AntiAircraft Trail, so as not to
trip on a root or a rock. I had turned left at Cougar Pass up onto
Tibbetts and I was just about to the junction with Tibbetts Marsh
when I saw this monster. Huh? I do not remember a stump like that
here! How is this possible? Where the heck am I? I still hadn't
seen Clay Pit Road until after I climbed all the way around this
guy, looking for a place to hide a cache. I had run through (and
not seen) the trail junction at Cougar Pass and had mistakenly
assumed that the junction at Klondike was Cougar Pass; so when I
turned left on Klondike, I thought I was turning left on Cougar
Pass.
Oh well, you get the idea. The main point is that this tree stood
out so much (even in conditions of terrible visibility), because it
is an amazing specimin. See if you agree. Harvey Manning does! He
calls it "absolutely massive" and "the second of the two natural
landmarks on the trail."
No need to leave the tail, and the cache isn't really on the stump
itself out of concern about damaging it. SO DON"T LOOK THERE.
FTF honors go to Shaddow!.
