Located on the former site of the Clayton Drive-in and next door to the former site of Telstra Research Labs (where EB Chief's father spent his working life) you will find the Australian Synchrotron. A high tech light source facility, it was opened in July 2007 costing the Victorian Government around AU$ 157 million.
The above co-ordinates will take you to the front gate: THERE IS NO NEED TO GO THERE, unless you'd really like to.(It could help with one of the answers, but not really necessary)
The Synchrotron uses 2 particle accelerator rings. The booster ring is 130 metres long and brings the electrons to 99.9% of the speed of light. Magnetic fields are used to force the electrons to give off photons, the particles that make up light. This high intensity light, ranging from x-rays to infra-red can be used for imaging of all kinds, including viewing chemicals at atomic levels.
The Outer ring of the Synchrotron is used to store current and is 216 metres in circumference.
The control centre is operated by 16 Linux computers. The system generates in excess of a pentabyte of data a week.
The internal pressure of the beam vessel is close to the vacuum of deep space. Collisions between electrons and gas molecules will degrade the beam quality and the lifetime of the beam, hence the vacuum. Beamtime is worth about AU$ 50 000 a day but demand exceeds supply of experimental time.
There is no need to go to the actual Synchrotron, they won't let you in without the appropriate documentation anyway!!
For your South co-ordinates you need to find the:
1. circumference of the outer storage ring = A
circumference of the inner booster ring = B
A + B = C
2. C + 18 = D
3. Divide D by 7 = E
4. The Synchrotron is at ??? Blackburn Road, half of this number = F
so...
S 37 E.F
Check sum for southing: all digits add up to 21
For your East co-ordinates you need to find the:
1. Approximately how many millions were spent by the Vic Gov't on the facility = J
2. percentage of speed of light electrons are accelerated to,
rounded down to a whole number = K
3. J + K + 1 = L
4. Add L to the last 3 digits of the initial 'east' co-ordinates = M
5. number of Linux computers in control centre multiplied by 9 = N
M - N = P
6. How many particle accelerators are used? Double it = Q
E 145 Q.P
Check sum for easting: all digits add up to 31
At GZ, we found both GPSrs a little flakey so you may need to resort to the clue. The physical cache is some distance from the Synchrotron, the reason is a relationship to inner and outer rings or circles. The Synchrotron has 2 and so did Melbourne!
Please rehide the cache as you would your own.
