Geocache Description:

The cache takes you to an area off the normal tourist routes around Glastonbury. Following the cache being muggled it has been changed to a nano canister. Please bring your own pen.

Legend has it that in Biblical times Joseph of Arimathea came to Britain, bearing the Holy Grail - the cup used by Christ at the Last Supper and later by Joseph to catch Christ's blood at the crucifixion. When Joseph landed on the island of Avalon, he set foot on Wirral (or Wearyall) Hill - just below the Tor. Exhausted, he thrust his staff into the ground, and rested. By morning, his staff had taken root - leaving a strange thorn bush - the sacred Glastonbury Holy Thorn.

The Thorn flowers twice yearly and a cutting from the tree in St John’s Churchyard is sent annually to the Queen at Christmas.

Parking is best along a road called Hill Head and from here it is a short walk across a field to the cache. On your way you will pass the Holy Thorn on the spine of the hill and enjoy different views of Glastonbury and the surrounding area.

The going will be very muddy and slippery when wet.

December 2010 - with great sadness we have to report that some truly ignorant vandals have tried to fell the Thorn. We can only hope that the tree survives and grows back to its former glory as a testament against such a despicable act.
