Geocache Description:

Byles Lookout... elev 963.4 ft
Not much is known about this forest fire lookout station... But we do know there was a 70ft tower on this spot in the 1940s and that it was reported destroyed in 1960.

CloquallumGuy and I spent an entire Saturday afternoon driving a maze of logging roads trying to figure the best route, then the next day found a relatively easy way in. You can imagine our excitement when, after all those dead ends and wrong turns, we finally arrived at the site and spotted some remnants of the old tower.

Driving Instructions... see additional waypoints below
In downtown Oakville turn at the post office onto S. State street, it soon becomes S. Bank road. Cross the river and turn left onto Garrard Creek road.

Follow the signs toward Brooklyn for approx. six miles. About one mile beyond the end of pavement turn right onto the Weyerhauser 'T line'(coords below).

Follow the 'T line' up the hill about 3 1/2 miles keeping to the main road... one fork near some fresh logging activity might be questionable, take the high road.

Park on the shoulder at N46*50.675... W123*23.778.
From there it is a moderate bushwhack (about 400 ft) up a low brushy ridge using whatever game trails you can find.

Note... please read
Although this road is neither gated nor posted, most of the roads in the area are "Yellow Dot" roads... weekends, daylight hours only. I assume that applies to this road as well.

Regardless, it is a narrow road and appears to be very busy. It would probably be advisable to stay away during the work week.

I wouldn't bring the family sedan up here, but SUVs and pickups should have no problem... Unless Chops is driving.

Alternate routes... for the adventurous cacher
CloquallumGuy and I drove in from Elma over Minot Peak and went out on Vesta Creek road west of Brooklyn. If you enjoy challenging your mapping and navigating skills, give it a try... Good luck!

Another FTF for the lockettfamily... congrats
