Het desastreuze jaar 1953. Het jaar waar alles een wending neemt. We schrijven 31 januari, 's avonds. Er woedde al een hele dag een zware storm. Niemand die aan eventuele erge gevolgen dacht, dus iedereen ging gewoon naar bed. Maar dan breekt om 3.00u 's nachts de dijk even ten zuiden van de Aardebolleweg door. Wolphaartsdijk en Oud-Sabbinge worden onder water gezet. Huizen en landerijen komen onder water te staan. Veel vee verdrinkt en 14 mensen vinden de dood in de rampnacht. Er overstromen vier polders: Oosterland-, Oud-Sabbinge-, Zuiderland- en Zuidvlietpolder.
Weken blijft het water in de polders staan. Ook de jaren daarna ondervindt men nog hinder ervan, door het zoute water is land onbruikbaar geworden en zijn huizen verzwakt geworden. Er wordt al snel begonnen de gaten te dichten en de dijken op te hogen. Dan wordt er een Deltaplan bedacht, wat o.a. inhoudt dat de Zandkreek wordt afgesloten. Zo ontstaat er een groot meer. Op 1 oktober 1960 wordt de Zandkreekdam geopend en is Noord-Beveland geen eiland meer, ook wordt het veer Wolphaartsdijk-Kortgene opgeheven (het zou nog tot 1997 duren vooraleer er weer een bootje vaarde). Het werd nu rustig in het dorp. Pas in 1961 is de Veerse Gatdam klaar en is het Veerse Meer geboren.

Floods from the sea can cause overflow or over-topping of flood defences like dikes as well as flattening of dunes or bluffs. Land behind the coastal defence may be inundated or experience damage. A flood from sea may be caused by a heavy storm (storm surge), a high tide, a tsunami, or a combination thereof. As many urban communities are located near the coast this is a major threat around the world. The North Sea flood of 1953 and the associated storm combined to create a major natural disaster which affected the coastlines of the Netherlands and England on the night of 31 January 1953 – 1 February 1953. Belgium, Denmark and France were also affected by flooding and storm damage.
A combination of a high spring tide and a severe European wind storm caused a storm tide. In combination with a tidal surge of the North Sea the water level locally exceeded 5.6 meters above mean sea level. The flood and waves overwhelmed sea defences and caused extensive flooding. Officially, 1,835 people were killed in the Netherlands, mostly in the south-western province of Zeeland.
