Geocache Description:

Give Me Your Hand
m y name is Death, and I am the second eldest of the Endless. One day every century, I live as a mortal, in order to understand the value of the life I usually take. Today is such a day, come with me on a journey of discovery and you might gain a reason for not wishing to die.
You will find yourself at the edge of a slope. There, where you stand, I once met a wise men. Ascent to the Sun — Spirits of the wise, and the learned in theology — St. Thomas Aquinas — He named what surround me.

St. Thomas Aquinas
"If thus of all the rest thou wishest to be informed, come, following my speech, with thy sight circling around upon the blessed chapel. At his front thou seest stairs. Thou shalt prove how the bread of others savors of salt, and how the mounting of another's stairs is a hard path. Up along the steps of the holy stairway thou have thus far ascended, only to give me glad welcome wit. Count the steps (a), holy soul, as thou rises to the temple which is walled with a date (b) that thy memory recollects.

And do thou follow me with thy affection so that thy heart depart not from my speech. Act not like the lamb, that leaves the milk of his mother, and, simple and wanton, at its own pleasure combats with itself. Go find the one thought to have been killed by arrows! He has the power to aid thee.

And thou mayest find the place if thou calculate the numbers offered beneath."

N 40o 38.(a / 2)'
W 008o 38.(b / 2 - 84)'

Make sure the all digit checksum (1) for a and b is 15.

Death

i f you are still following my steps, you might arrive to a small temple. Realize the beauty of the saint inside. An icon of a perfect man with arrows penetrating his body.

Listen to what he once told me.

"Come close, my friend.

My name is St. Sebastian. I once was a young guard in the Imperial Roman Army, the favourite of the emperor Diocletian. He was not aware of my Christian faith and when he discovered he demanded that I renounce Christianity, but I refused. The emperor ordered that I should be executed. I was tied to a tree, and Mauretanian archers shot me with arrows. Miraculously, and no doubt to the supreme annoyance of Diocletian, I did not die from the arrows, and after my wounds had been healed, I returned to the emperor's palace. This time the death was final!

As I did, you must go now through your path to a place where you shall be back one day. Don't go inside or else you might not come out! I was martyred twice and do not wish the same to you. Use the year (c) you see on the wall and the number of windows in the doors (d) of the temple to reach your last address.
"

N 40o 37.(((b + c) / d - 77) / 2)'
W 008o 38.((b - a / d ) / 2 - 229)'

And the all digit checksum (1) for c and d is 26.
Saint Sebastian

a s you reach the entrance of the stone garden you might hear a song echoing in your head.

"A dreaded sunny day
So I meet you at the cemetry gates
You'll find a date(e)(f) on each side
Please keep that in mind

Don't go inside and faithly go for a walk.
All those people, all those lives
Where are they now?

With loves, and hates
And passions just like mine
They were born
And then they lived
And then they died

It seems so unfair
I want to cry
"

I leave you now as you go and reach the motive to follow me to this place. Go, but do not rush!

N 40o 37.((f - e) + b / 2 + a / 20 - d x 50)'
W 008o 38.((b - e) x (f - c) + 267)'

Ah! And don't forget to assure that the all digit checksum (1) for e and f is 33
And There Is Death
w e'll meet again, don't know where, don't know when, but I know we'll meet again, some sunny day.

Take your time... As I will be your final visitor!
a s you follow the steps of Death you will find:

Cemetry

Chapel of St. Sebastian
The Southern Cemetery of Aveiro
One of the city cemeteries.

Chapel of St. Thomas Aquinas
The Chapel of St. Thomas Aquinas
A chapel in ruins in the centre of the city. Once part of the reformed factory nearby. It was destroyed by a fire. Soon to be recovered and meant to receive the contemporary art collection of the town hall.

The Chapel of St. Sebastian
A small chapel once built at one of the exits of the city.

The final location is near the place where a russian and his girlfriend died when they were surprised by a rapid train, in March 2007, when trying to take a shortcut to cross the rail tracks. They were students from the Ekaterinburg University taking a post graduation in Aveiro University. The wall you will see was built after that tragic accident.

(1) If the number X is composed by three digits - X1X2X3 - and the number Y is composed by two digits - Y1Y2 - the all digit checksum will be X1 + X2 + X3 + Y1 + Y2
