Obscure Songs I Like: Mathematical Pi
Written and performed by Ken Ferrier and Antoni Chan

Happy Pi Day Everyone! March 14th (3/14) is celebrated as Pi (3.14) Day by math enthusiasts around the world. Many songs have been written about Pi, and this cache celebrates the song, Mathematical Pi . OK, the melody is not exactly obscure; it's based on a great American ballad, but the song is entertaining none-the-less. This song even has a curling reference. How cool is that!

Pi is the mathematical constant that is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Mathematically, it’s transcendental and irrational. Its decimal places go on infinitely.

When I think about Pi, Carl Sagan’s book Contact is brought to mind. In the plot of this book, a message is discovered buried deep, deep within the decimal places of Pi. This message is interpreted as some sort of artist’s signature by the universe’s creator.

I thought this to be a pretty cool plot line and it made me wonder if there really is something buried within Pi. So I decided to take a look, and you won’t believe it, but I found the coordinates to my latest cache buried in Pi. Now I only looked within the first one million decimal places, so it shouldn’t be hard for others to find them too. The north and west coordinates were found separately and were the closest possible coordinates to the published coordinates. For example, if the published coordinates were found in Pi, they would appear like 4201806 and 08801248.

The published coordinates bring you to the center of a large grassy circle at the end of a parking spur and is a good place to park if open. It’s currently not open, but you can park close by.

The difficulty rating of this cache refers to both the puzzle and the hide. It’s very well camouflaged, and on nice days, the area around the cache may experience high traffic. So, use stealth in your search. Just like Pi, you may find the final to be completely irrational.

You can check your answers for this puzzle on Geochecker.com.

Like the song above, this cache is a blatant rip-off of the OSIL cache series by RheS featuring obscure songs by obscure artists. The melody of this cache is the same, but with new fun cheesy lyrics.
