The Blue Lagoon (Icelandic: Bláa lónið) geothermal spa is one of the most visited attractions in Iceland.

The steamy waters are part of a lava formation.

The warm waters are rich in minerals bathing in the Blue Lagoon is reputed to help some people suffering from skin diseases such as psoriasis.

The lagoon is fed by the water output of the nearby geothermal power plant Svartsengi.

Superheated water is vented from the ground near a lava flow and used to run turbines that generate electricity.

After going through the turbines, the steam and hot water passes through a heat exchanger to provide heat for a municipal hot water heating system.

Then the water is fed into the lagoon for recreational and medicinal users to bathe in. The spa is located in a lava field in Grindavik on the Reykjanes Peninsula, southwestern Iceland.

The Blue Lagoon spa and geothermal complex is clearly visible from any of the usual satellite imagery sources at coordinates.

Die Bláa lónið (deutsch Blaue Lagune) ist ein Thermalfreibad bei Grindavík auf der Reykjanes-Halbinsel auf Island.

Sie liegt nahe der Hauptstadt Reykjavik und des internationalen Flughafens in Keflavik und ist eine bekannte Touristenattraktion in Südwest-Island.

Der See entstand als "Abfallprodukt" des nahe gelegenen Geothermalkraftwerkes Svartsengi, das die Energie des gleichnamigen Vulkansystems nützt.

Dort wird ein Gemisch aus Meer- und Süßwasser aus einer Tiefe von etwa 2 km, das in dieser Tiefe bis zu 240°C heiß wird, zur Oberfläche gepumpt, wo es zur Stromerzeugung genutzt wird.

Anschließend fließt es in das umliegende Lavafeld.

So bildete sich dort ein Salzwassersee in der typisch blau-weißen Farbe.

Zuerst kam der lokalen Bevölkerung der Gedanke, darin zu baden, bis schließlich das Thermalbad errichtet wurde.

Dieses pumpt mittlerweile auch eigenes Thermalwasser aus der Erde.

Einen besonderen Reiz hat das Baden in der Winterzeit.

Baden in diesem Wasser lindert nachweislich Psoriasis (Schuppenflechte) und andere Hautkrankheiten.
