St Thomas's Well in Stirling manifests itself as a large
duckpond in the middle of a private garden. Water rises from a
spring in the centre, and steps once led down the embankment to the
water. There was originally a farm, St Thomas's Well Farm, here,
and more modern houses were built in the 1970's and 1980's. At one
time it was recorded that there were a number of carved stones
around the pond, although there is no sign of them today. It has
been said that the stones came from a large church, 12th century or
possibly earlier but not the first church on the site. It has been
suggested that this was the site of the chapel where Robert the
Bruce took the sacrament before Bannockburn and of the holy well
known as 'Christ's Well', not the alleged sites in
Cambusbarron.
When you walk down the hill from the cache location and are
standing beside the pond you can see an old building built of
yellowish stone to your left. This is an old malthouse which was
once one of the outbuildings on the farm. It has been converted
into a garage for the house next door.
There are good views from the cache location to the carse of
Stirling with Ben Lomond, Ben Ledi and the Braes of Doune in the
distance. There is a footbridge over the motorway which will take
you to Cambusbarron.
