Many people know the Island Mallorca - but did you know that it came from 2 Islands ?
Million years ago (learn more about the correct timeperiod on the sign at the location) Mallorca Island looked like two paleoislands surrounded by shallow water and reefs (see Picture) such as those now found in the tropics.
One reef was formed by the mountain range „Tramontana“ and the other included the „Sierra de Levante“ and the „Isla de Cabrera“
Where you step on today at the location was part of a large reef platform which was maintained for a period of about 3 million years.
This is known because the sedimentary rock called colcarenites you can see under the sand and at cliffs contain fossils of the fauna that lived in lagoon.
These materials were exposed to erosion by lowering the sea level at Mediterranean about X,5 million years ago (X = question to answer – solution is found on the sign at the location), subsequently dune systems were settled on the eroded reef. These dunes formed rocks with cross stratification called eolianitas (and it has a local used name - see on the sign - and use the plural (which is also used on the sign) for Y when mailing!) that can be seen at the cliffs and near Castle of Punta N’Amer.
Finally on this bedrock a dune system was installed which is the deposit of sand that you see today.
To find out how high the three layers (eolianitas, bedrock, dune-system) are today above the sea level, please measure the hight with your GPS at the Cache-Location ! (Question 4 to answer, see below)
And this finally formed the island Mallorca as we see it today.
But it came from two islands !
Amazing – isn’t it !
And the speciallity of this location is that you can see alle the three earth layers described above at one place !
To log this Earthcache you have to:
1. Take a Picture of you and your GPS (or if alone only your GPS) at BUT WITH THE VIEW OF THE BEACH AND THE HOTELS - not the Infosign (PLEASE! SPOILER!)(since the newest Guidelines no logrequirement anymore)
and mail me the Answer to the Questions:
2. How many million years ago were the materials exposed to erosion by lowering the sea level at Mediterranean? (X,5 Million - use only the number left of the decimal point)
3. What ist he local used name for eolianitas ? (the answer is on the sign!) (Y) (use plural when mailing)
4. Measure the hight at the location above sea-level with your GPSr and write it in your mail !

Viele Menschen kennen die Insel Mallorca - aber wusstet Ihr, dass sie aus zwei Inseln entstand ?
Vor Millionen Jahren (mehr über die richtige Zeitperiode können Ihr auf der Infotafel erfahren) sah Mallorca aus, wie zwei von seichtem Wasser umgebene Inseln und Riffe (siehe Bild), wie man sie in der jetzigen Zeit in den Tropen findet.
Ein Riff wurde von der Bergkette "Tramontana" gebildet und das andere bestand aus der "Sierra de Levante" und der "Isla de Cabrera"
Die Stelle, an der die Infotafel steht war Teil einer großen Riff-Plattform, die für einen Zeitraum von etwa 3 Millionen Jahren bestand.
Dies ist bekannt, weil das Sedimentgestein, dass man unter dem Sand sehen kann, Fossilien der Fauna enthält, die in Lagunen lebten.
Diese Materialien wurden der Erosion ausgesetzt, als der Meeresspiegel im Mittelmeer sich vor X,5 Millionen Jahren (X = Frage 2 – die Lösung kann man auf der Infotafel finden) senkte, anschließend bildeten sich Dünen auf dem erodierten Riff. Diese Dünen bildeten Felsen mit Kreuzschichtung - genannt eolianitas (hierfür gibt es noch eine lokale Bezeichnung, die auch auf dem Schild genannt ist (Bezeichnung = Plural = Y )) - die an den Klippen zu sehen ist und in der Nähe der Burg von Punta N'Amer.
Schließlich, auf diesem Fundament, bildeten sich die Ablagerung von Sand, die Ihr heute sehen könnt.
Um herauszufinden, in welcher Höhe über dem Meeresspiegel sich diese drei Schichten heutzutage befinden, bedient Euch bitte Eures GPS-Gerätes (Aufgabe 4).
Hier nun die Aufgaben:
1. Macht ein Foto von Euch (oder Eurem GPS, Begleiter-Coin, Avatar oder Eurer Sockenpuppe) mit dem Strand als Hintergrund. Bitte kein Foto von der Info-Tafel. Dies ist nach aktuellem Reglement keine Logbedingung – wäre aber schön.
2. Vor wieviel Millionen Jahren senkte sich der Meeresspiegel, so dass die Riffe der Erosion ausgesetzt wurden (X,5 Millionen Jahre – bitte nur die Zahl links vom Komma)
3. Wie lautet der lokal gebräuchliche Name für „eolianitas“ (Siehe Schild – Plural verwenden = Y).
4. Messt die Höhe über dem Meeresspiegel am Infoschild und nennt diese in Eurer Mail.

Mucha gente conoce la isla de Mallorca, pero ¿sabes que se originaron a partir de dos islas?
La isla de Mallorca tenía el aspecto de dos Paleoislas rodeadas de aguas poco profundas con arrecifes como los que encontramos actualmente en las zonas tropicales. Una de ellas estaba formada por la Sierra de Tramontana y la otra incluiría las Sierras de Levante y la isla de Cabrera.
Donde pisas ahora mismo, era parte de una plataforma de arrecife de gran tamaño que se mantuvo durante un período de aproximadamente 3 millones de años.
Esto se conoce porque la roca sedimentaria llamada calcarenitas y se pueden ver restos de fósiles de la fauna marina que vivía aquí, en los acantilados o debajo de la arena.
Estos materiales quedaron expuestos a la erosión al bajar el nivel del mar en todo el Mediterráneo hace unos 5 millones de años, instalándose posteriormente sistemas de dunas sobre los arrecifes erosionados. Estas dunas formaron unas rocas con estratificación cruzada llamadas eolianitas ( o ::: = y) que se pueden observar puntualmente en los acantilados y lugares en las proximidades del Casillo de Punta n´Amer.
Por último, sobre esta formación rocosa se asentó el depósito de dunas que puedes ver actualmente.
Tareas a realizar para poder validar el log :
1. Hazte una fotografía (de ti o de tu GPS) con la playa como fondo . Sin que se vea el panel de información. Siguiendo las normas, la foto no es obligatoria, pero se agradecen.
2. ¿Cuántos millones de años hace que los materiales fueron expuestos a la erosión cuando bajó el nivel del mar Mediterráneo? ( X,5 millones de años de edad – Solo el numero que remplaza la X)
3. ¿Cómo llaman los habitantes locales a las "eolianitas" ( Encontrarás la información en el panel . Plural = Y ) .
4. Medir la altura sobre el nivel del mar a la altura del panel de información.
