Actually the whole island „Sa
Dragonera“ is an earthcache. Sa Dragonera (engl. Dragon
Island) is an uninhabitated solid rock island in front of the west
coast of the spain Middle Sea island Majorca. It is separated from
there by the 780 meters expanded „Canal des Freu“. Sa
Dragonera and Majorca are part of the Balearic Islands.
The island Dragonera has an expanse of 288 hectare, with a length
of 4.2 kilometers and a width of 900 meters. Politically it belongs
to the township of Andratx. On top of the highest point „Na
Pòpia“ (353 meters) you'll find the ancient lighthouse
„Far Vell“. That's why the residents call this mountain
„Puig des Far Vell“.
In the year of 1987 the island was bought by the administration
department of Mallorca. Sa Dragonera, Es Pantaleu and Illa Mitjana
became a nature protection reserve in 1995 by the government of the
Balearic Islands.
In the longitudinal cut, seen from Sant Elm, the island as a matter
of fact appears as a dragon, but take a look yourself...
From the natural harbour „Cala Lladó“ up to the coast
of the island there is a small valley wherein water is accumulating
and some agricultural areas are built up. The leftover island
mostly consists of macchie or cliffy crags. This is stony,
frequently with herbage perfoliated terrain, it also can be solid
rock. Crags are primarily found where rock is broken against its
dip direction.
More than 300 million years ago, in the area of the todays middle
Europe, the past continents of North Amerika, Eurasia and Africa
came across each other. The immediate consequence was the bending
up of new mountains from Spain to East Europe.
The Serra de Tramuntana range, the Serres de Llevant in the east
and the middle area are made of mesozoic lime stone, especially of
the Jurassic, 180 million years ago. The island is calcified up to
90 percent. There is also lime stone under the tertiary and
quaternary accumulation of the central plain.
By the elemental force of the bowels of the earth, Majorca was
totally compressed and as a result has been reduced about 55
percent. The deposit of the Jurassic were proper torn up and
several times shifted one upon the other. In the consequence you
have the upheaval of the todays mountain and hill formations.
In the tertiary the lower areas of the island were completely
flooded. The stone of the Triassic, the Jurassic and the Cretaceous
was overlayed by the deposition of the younger tertiary. Huge
masses of detritus were transported by heavy precipitation out of
the Serra down the plains, which deepend the cracks and chasms of
the range more and more.
The carbon dioxide in the rain - and so in the ground water -
liquidated much of the lime stone, leaded to the karst formation of
the mountain and hill region of Majorca. The uplifted bearing, the
crevasse formation and the thickness of lime stone increased the
karst formation.
The island Dragonera is geologically speaking an extansion of the
majorcan Tramuntana Range, a mountain tip, looming out of the
water, though the vegetation isn't the same like in the leftover
Tramuntana Range. It is defined by the dimension of the island, the
abrupt topography and the influence of the sea.
The „Garrigues“, beach woods of wild oil trees and rose
mary shrubs, are giving Sa Dragonera its typical appearance.
In reference to the fauna, the name is very insightful (Dragonera
comes from the majorcan dragó, dragon or lizard). In Dragonera
there is an endemic, that means only there to be found, lizard
species, the Dragonera lizard (Podarcis lilfordi).
This all makes Sa Dragonera geologically
unique.
***At the given coordinates you will find a conspicuous geographic
check mark. To log this cache as found, send us the answers to the
following tasks via e-mail:
1. To the check mark you are leaded by a hiking way. Which colour
does the hiking way have on the map at the entrance of
the protection reserve.
2. Measure the length of the conspicuous geographic check
mark.
3. When you are arriving or leaving the island, estimate the width
of the entrance of the nature harbour "Cala
Lladó".
4. Take voluntarily a picture of the domain flora or fauna and add
it to your log.***
Osteuropa neue Gebirge aufgefaltet.
Einzigartigkeit.
