Lava Tubes

	Lava tubes are caves, which are formed from lava flows. They are created when a lava flow on the surface solidifies first, but the interior remains liquid and flowing. After the source of the lava flow has run dry a cavity can remain. An essential requirement for the formation of lava tubes is an inclination on the volcanic conus up to 5 °. Especially long tubes are produced by a following flat terrain profile and a continuous outflow from the corresponding lava crater. The speed of flowing lava in the tub can be up to 60 km/h. The temperature of the liquid lava creating a tube is about 1200° C. After the lava has flown out of the tube, a flat ground profile remains. Wall marks can show former flow levels.
	In the lava tubes you can find several different types of stalactites called lavacicles. Two of them are: 1. Shark Tooth Stalactites The development of " Shark Tooth Stalactites" begins as the lava flow in the tube decreases and lava drips from the ceiling. A small driblet of lava from a semi-solid ceiling grows by additional layers as successive flows of lava rise and fall in the lava tube, coating and recoating the stalactite with more and more material. They can vary from a few millimeters to over a meter in length.
	2. Splash Stalactites As lava flows through a tube, material will be splashed up on the ceiling and ooze back down, hardening into a stalactite. This type of formation results in a very irregularly shaped stalactite. Often they may be of a different color than the original lava that formed the cave.

The cache
	For your security take 2 flashlights with you. A helmet, good shoes and gloves make sense. Don´t go alone! Be careful! You do the cache on your own risk. Respekt nature: don´t leave anything in the cave, don´t take things away and don´t destroy anything. Park your car near N28 36.181 W17 52.635. Follow the camino SLEP 107 uphill until you reach the hiking trail PR LP 14.1. Follow this trail up to the lava fields. You find the entrance of the cave at N 28° 36.065 W 017° 51.682
	To log this cache you need to do the following things: Estimate the highth of the caves entrance and mail us your opinion. Don´t wait for our answer to log. We will contact you if your answer is wrong. Log picture(s) of you exploring the cave (inside as well as outsite). Logs without picture will be deleted.
