#4 in a series
of discontinued, abandoned, or long forgotten roads within
Townsend.
Townsend has more than a few roads that over the course of time
have been abandoned, discontinued, or maintenance has stopped on
them.
Old City Road is one of the oldest roads in Townsend and is now
truncated into two separate pieces:
The first stretch of road is off of Fitchburg Road (route 13) and
is still in use until it intersects Lunenburg Road in West
Townsend, and appears to end there.
Approximately 1.25 miles further west on New Fitchburg Road you can
find the remainder of Old City Road as it leads to Vinton Pond
Road.
While many cannot agree on why Old City Road has it's name, it may
tie in with the fact that Townsend once had a fourth village named
Rogersville that was located on the far end of Old City Road. The
doomed village disappeared over a fairly short period of time prior
to the late 1800's.
It is said that the decline started with a poor growing season
followed by a severe winter, and then a raging epidemic of some
undocumented illness.
The final death-knell of the village was a fire that burned most of
the remaining buildings that had not already been abandoned. You
can still see the stone foundations and some cellar holes
throughout the woods in the area.
...hhhmmm - sounds like another road lost to time, memory, and the
elements.
Happy
'Caching!
