Cache to Cub Scouts: The Cub Scout program in the US began in 1930 and currently is open to boys in 1st through 5th grades. The Cub Scouts offer fun and challenging experiences that inspire confidence and teach important values. Cub Scout geocaching is an important addition to the Scout program. This cache is designed with the Cub Scout and other young children in mind. Please leave appropriate toys and "swag" for young people of all programs.
You are looking for an ammo can hidden outside of the entrance to Schiff Scout Reservation. PLEASE ONLY SEARCH DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS! There is parking outside the camp gates very close to the cache. These spots are usually used by anglers who can fish in Deep Pond if they have a DEC permit. If the parking spots are blocked(because it's not permitted to fish), it's still OK to park for the geocache.PLEASE DON'T ENTER THE PRIVATE PROPERTY OF THE CAMP! (Unless you're attending a program here, or are a permitted angler in season. Kevin, the Camp Ranger is often nearby and is aware of the cache. Though not a cacher himself, he may come by and say hello.
Schiff Scout Reservation is a magnificent 400 acre camp that welcomes thousands of Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers and their leaders to a variety of year-round activities and also leader training programs. It's home to Camp Wauwepex, our Cub Scout Summer Camp. It's also used for Boy Scout weekend campouts in tents, lean-to's or cabins.
Camp Wauwepex, which means "Place of Good Water," opened in 1921 in Miller Place, then moved to the present location the next year. It has faithfully served campers from Nassau County ever since. As might be expected of a camp that old, it is steeped in Scouting tradition and history. There were once three separate camps operating at Wauwepex, named Pioneer Division, Frontier Division and Indian Division. Since 1976, it's no longer used for summer troop camping, but keeps busy with Cub Scout camp and other activities year-round. To honor the generosity of the Schiff family, it took their name in the late 70's when a camp of the same name in NJ closed up.
