Warwick is, not surprisingly, the county town of Warwickshire.
It lies on the River Avon and is next to Leamington Spa. It holds an annual range of festivals including Warwick Words and the Folk Festival, which attracts many Morris dancing groups. As of 2001, the population was 25,434.
Early History
Warwick was supposedly founded on the banks of the river Avon in 914AD. The word Warwick means dwellings by the weir.
Fire
A huge fire damaged the town in 1694. It began at around 2:00pm on September 5 when a stray spark from a kindling torch set fire to the houses. Because the summer was hot and the houses were wooden, the flames spread very quickly and destroyed a lot of the town.
As a result, there are fewer medieval buildings than you would expect and most of the buildings are from the 17th and 18th centuries.
