Another Seth! geocache that defies description. The coordinates
listed are not the geocache location! They will get you in the
general vicinity. Here's the idea: Geocachers regularly use numbers
to find obscure places. This time, you're going to track down
Obscure Numbers, then you can find the
geocache.
First, you need to do some research on the Planimeter.
This obscure gadget was improved upon and patented in 1896
by Edward J. Willis. If you don't have a planimeter hanging around
the house, it's because a planimeter is used to determine the mean
effective pressure of (and horsepower provided by) steam in a
cylinder during a stroke of the piston. It determines this by
tracing a diagram of the steam chamber. Right. Well, you need to
track down Willis' Patent
Number.
On a totally unrelated matter, Kyoto is
Japan's 3rd largest city and also one of its oldest. It was
originally founded as Heian in 794. Its new castle,
Nijo Castle, was built in 1603. Your mission is to track
down the ISBN Number of the book
Kyoto Romance by Teruhide Kato (paperback, 1992).
These two numbers will get you the coordinates of the first of
two locations. The Patent Number
gets plugged in here (omit the comma and insert the decimal as
shown): W 122° --.---' The
ISBN Number plugs in here (omit the
dashes and insert the decimal as shown): N --.--------° Note that the latitude is given in
decimal degrees so you will need to convert them for use in your
GPS.
Okay, now you have the coordinates for the first location. Go
there and find two dates written like this: "ABCD-WXYZ".
Insert numbers from these dates into the following for the
coordinates of the actual geocache: W 122° AA.CCC
N 47° 32.WZD You are looking for a plastic box, in
a black plastic sleeve. Initial contents are a logbook, plastic
Liberty statues, rings, Nintendo cards, a geocachingkids.com key
ring, etc. The container is not very big, so bring smaller items to
trade. There are also postcards with the logbook, so please take
one even if you don't trade.
