Geocache Description:

This is relatively easy with good access, but please watch for snakes.

Eliza Forlong has been described as one of Australia's greatest pioneers.

This remarkable story begins with tragedy in Scotland. Eliza & husband John suffered the death of 4 or their 6 children. When a surviving child, William, fell ill, it was suggested that the family move to a warmer climate. Eliza decided that Australia was to be their new home, and persuaded John (wine merchant) that this was in the family's best interest.

Eliza thought that sheep farming could provide the family with a solid income in Australia. But first of all, she moved with her young sons to Germany to gain exposure to their sheep industry. Eliza hand selected the best Saxon merinos by travelling from farm to farm, then drove them to Hamburg, sailed them to England and walked them to Liverpool. Her son, William, as an 18 year old, sailed with these sheep to Tasmania in 1829.

In 1831, Eliza, John and his sister Janet Templeton (widowed with 9 children), set sail for Tassie, with many more Saxon sheep as travel companions. John died in 1834 while on a trip to England.

After a short stay in Tasmania, the Templetons left for the mainland, and by 1838, they "settled" Seven Creeks at Euroa. Aboriginals inhabited the region, and living conditions were primitive and harsh. In 1851, Seven Creeks Estate was purchased by William Furlong, and Eliza oversaw the running of the property during William's frequent absences. Eliza lived here until her death in 1859.

Eliza Forlong left a lasting legacy on Australian super fine merino wool. The blood lines of Eliza's flock were considered the "best of the best". The superior quality of her stock and their offspring was considered to have bulstered the economy for many, many years.

The memorial the coordinates lead you to is shaped as a "bale of wool", and it is facing the Seven Creeks Estate where Eliza lived. With your back to the memorial, you can see the gardens of the magnificent Seven Creeks Estate residence on the hill in front of you. Locals are hoping Eliza may be immortalized in bronze statue in the future. Further information on Eliza's story can be found in the cache.

The cache is a 1 litre sistema container.
Initial contents include:
log book and pen
information sheet on Eliza Forlong (please leave)
Small swaps please, and try to swap "farm yard" theme items.

This is the revival of a cache that had been archived. I discovered the cache accidentally while on a trip looking for hides. The container was intact and the cache was in good condition. The spot definitely deserves a cache and the original owner had put a lot of work into the research and information, so I thought I might adopt the cache. I made contact with the original owner who is no longer caching. They gave me permission to reuse the site, the information and the cache, provided all reference to their name was removed. They tried to reactivate the original listing for me to adopt, but apparently there's no way to do that, so I have set up this new listing and have swapped the logs out and revived the cache. Please enjoy this "new" cache and kudos to the original owner.
