Geocache Description:

This very nice multicache that has been found by Hungarian geocachers for many years now (GCAMVK on www.geocaching.hu) finally became available on this international site as well, for those few unfortunate souls who don't speak the tricky Hungarian language.

Travel Bugs are welcome. If you take one, if you log one, or if you see one, please, don't forget to log it!

Getting there:

By car: Follow Route 66 from Pécs to Mánfa. After passing the village of Mánfa you will find parking on your left at the given coordinates (see waypoint) at "Kölyuki betérö".

By bus: You may take a long-distance bus to get here. The Pécs-Kaposvár line is probably your best bet. See the bus schedule here. Ask for a ticket to "Kölyuk, autóbusz-váróterem".

This three stage multi leads you from the highway to the Mélyvölgy (Deep Valley).
Please, collect the 3 parts of the password from the three stages and send it to cache owner. Sorry, logs without password will be deleted.

You will go through part of the 709 hectare (1752 ac) Melegmány Valley Nature Reserve and will follow the playfully winding brook that is very typical of this valley.

42 various species of protected plants can be found in the area. Noteworthy are the wolf's-foot clubmoss (Lycopodium clavatum) and the Siberain Iris (Iris sibirica.
Near the water you may observe the so called (Angelico-Cirsietum) grassland community. The most abundant species of this plant association is the common butterbur (Petasites hybridus). Where there is a more open area among the huge leaves of the butterbur one can find the protected rough horsetails (Equisetum hyemale).

Our favorite forest plant is ramsons or wild garlic (Allium ursinum). It grows in vast quantities, forming a dense carpet near Stage 2 and all over the Deep valley. Ramsons belongs to the lily family. It is a 15-30 cm (6-12 inches) tall perennial plant with white umbel, growing in large colonies in woodlands of hornbeam, oak or beech. The Latin name owes to the brown bear's taste for the bulbs and habit of digging up the ground to get at them; they are also a favorite of wild boar. Ramsons leaves, bulbs and flowers are edible raw or cooked. They can be used as salad, spice, boiled as a vegetable, in soup, etc. Ramsons flowers before deciduous trees leaf in the spring, filling the air with characteristic garlic-like scent. In Hungary we traditionally eat the leaves only. Leaves can be picked before flowering, from mid-March to early May. Ramsons is a medicinal plant. It is particularly effective in reducing high blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels. It has antibacterial and antifungal properties, as well as antioxidant properties that protect against free radicals. It helps increase blood vessel width and can also reduce platelet aggregation (blood stickiness), protect against plaques and blood clots. Ramsons leaves are easily mistaken for lily of the valley, sometimes also those of Colchicum autumnale and Arum maculatum. All three are poisonous. A good means of positively identifying ramsons is grinding the leaves between one's fingers, which should produce a garlic-like smell.

Look for the first stage beside the Piros sáv trail, on the gate of the Cifra-mill. Find the date and add 712 to it in order to get a nice round figure.

For the second stage you'll need to cross the brook in order to turn on Piros kör trail. The narrow path may occasionally be muddy and overgrown, but your efforts will be rewarded by a spectacular rock formation, and, of course the plastic container of the second stage of the cache.
You may quench your thirst at the Köfejtö kút (Quarry spring) that has gotten its name from the abandoned quarry. Its distinctive taste is characteristic of the springs in the area.

On our way to the third stage we are passing the Kölyuk (Rock Hole), an interesting rock formation and (a blocked) entrance to a cave, traditionally considered the gate of the Deep valley. Here you are walking in the real valley, the trail winding beside the brook, crossing it more than once (to great pleasure for children). Light and shade are playing their eternal and whimsical game. You may observe the karst formations typical of the Mélyvölgy: for example how lime carried by the water forms deposits.
You will find the third stage at a long wooden bridge that the Piros sáv trail leads through.

Further information, technical details:

Please, don't retrieve or replace the cache when muggles are present and don't log right next to the hide!

We hid the caches near the trail in ways that are easy to identify for trained geocacher eyes. Please, use the trails wherever possible in order to minimize our adverse impact on the environment. Don't navigate in straight line!

Ticks can be found in the area, so it is suggested to be vaccinated against tick encephalitis and to use repellent and wear long pants.

Please put swap, not junk into the cache. Don't put expired bus passes, cigarette, business cards, candy and other similar trash.

We placed the caches at the time of relatively good satellite reception by averaging 500 point within 10 minutes. The satellite reception in the Mélyvölgy and its vicinity is generally poor, so it may happen that your GPS jumps around. This is why we tried to aid your search by easy hides (and also this is why we rated its difficulty to 3). Use the hints and the pictures and trust your geosense instead of your GPS!
