Geocache Description:

This cache is placed on the Bartlett Covered Bridge and may be used to satisfy one of the requirements for GC1XHWG, The Covered Bridges of New Hampshire challenge.

Barlett Bridge was originally built in 1851. It is of Paddleford truss construction with added arches. It is 166 feet 10 inches long with a roadway width of 14 feet 6 inches and a vertical clearance of 14 feet 6 inches. It spans the Saco river and is closed to traffic, but you may walk on it.

The bridge was abandoned and closed to traffic in 1939. In 1966 it was sold to a private individual and repaired. A gift and antique shop was built inside the bridge. In 1990 the bridge was renovated for a cost of $38,000. One layer of decking was removed and the bridge's weight was reduced by 25 tons.

Parking is at the Covered Bridge House right next to the bridge.

Cache is placed with permission of the bridge owners.
