In 2003 the Hobart City Council erected a memorial made form
earth and glass walls. The vertical angles of the walls match the
angles of the Victoria Cross medal and their taper (a traditional
symbol of spirituality) mirrors the tapering forms of the existing
Cenotaph obelisk and the bench seats take their form and colour
from the VC medal and ribbon.
The two earthen walls contain soil from the birthplace of all of
Tasmania's thirteen Victoria Cross recipients, as well as soil from
the battlefield where the earned their VC. Stainless steel bands
wrapping the base of the rammed earth walls carry the names of the
battlefields and the soldiers birthplaces. The memorial also tells
the story of each VC winner, and how they came to win their
award.
To hear the Memorial Soundscape you need to walk on the inside
of the glass wall where there is a movement sensor that will start
the recording. The detector is just below the glass and is hard to
see while standing. If for some reason it doesn't start pass your
hand in front of the sensor.
Now onto the cache. You will notice that on each end of the
walls there is a plaque. on the river side there are three dates
(year only) they will be ABCD EFHG IJKL. on the city side plaque
there is one date MNOP.
The cache is located at 42 CM.DL(G+H) 147 MN.EJP
