Steinbruch Altenmittlau
Quarry Altenmittlau
Up to 1970 Permian dolomitic limestone was quarried here, originally for lime and later on for road metal and fertilizer production. In the quarry Schmitt are unlocked three substantial layers of the recent earth antiquity, to Permian, which give an idea of geologic history: Toward end of the earth antiquity (Paläozoikum) 300 million years ago the basement of the Spessarts lifted out northwest before the Spessart extended a far sea basin, which was enough in the Taunus. Fossils and minerals Immediately after the time of the red-lying approx. 250 million years ago yellowish sand and rubble became, partially bakes (Konglomerat); of brooks of the Spessarts and also the Taunus' here maturedly at the edge of the sea basin. These sediments are called Zechsteinkonglomerat. For mineralogists and geologists the quarry is world-famous for its excellent blue azurite crystals, often referred to the mineralogical literature. The terrigenous sediments of the Upper Permian Zechstein comglomerate beds countain famous fossilized branches and cones of coniferous trees of a species that was given the name of Voltzia hexagona (Bischoff). Geinitz Its no possible to went into the quarry, because it will be fille. However one can run around the quarry.
