This series is dedicated to Vermont's nesting wood warblers,
a
family of small North American songbirds, many of whom sport
bright
colors and sing songs that can be learned with patience and
practice. They return from their wintering grounds just as
the
leaves—and insects—begin to come out.
Black-throated Green Warblers are common nesters in Vermont,
favoring mixed woods. Their coal black throats contrast
strongly
with their bright yellow faces. Their backs are sometimes
described
as bright green, but it looks olive at best to me. I’m
hard
pressed to admit to olive. Frankly, I think it looks like a
non-descript sort of brown, so don’t be misled by an
expectation of some parrot-like green out there in our New
England
woods.
It’s song is easy to recognize, a series of buzzy
trills
classically rendered as, “Trees, trees, murmuring
trees.” This mnemonic has the advantage of getting the
rhythm
correct, but the sound is all wrong. The correct sound is harder
to
imitate, but the bird must have drawn a lot of the same letter
when
sounds were being passed out. Everything sounds like
z’s.
“Zee, zee, zur zur, zee,” would be closer, but
doesn’t have enough z’s in it.
Abundance and habitat data are from Birdwatching in
