This series is dedicated to Vermont's nesting wood warblers,
a
family of small North American songbirds, many of whom sport
bright
colors and sing songs that can be learned with patience and
practice. They return from their wintering grounds just as
the
leaves—and insects—begin to come out.
Canada Warblers are fairly common, but secretive, seldom
venturing
out of the thick, shrubby deciduous growth in which they nest.
They
sing from low perches surrounded by foliage that denies the all
but
the most lucky or persistent birder a good view of its
handsome
gray plumage above with bright yellow below. The yellow is
accented
by a bold "necklace" of black spots that align to form
streaks
running down the breast.
The song is far too rapid for me to use words as a mnemonic, so
it
seems like I have to learn it all over again every time I get
near
the bird--and I know that I must walk by many without noticing
thembecause I haven't mastered their song.
Start at Blue-winged Warbler, GC2C6FY, if you want to do all the
warblers at once. That way, the caches will usually be on the same
side of the road that you are.
Abundance and habitat data are from Birdwatching in Vermont
by Ted Murin and Bryan Pfeiffer.
Co-FTF honors go to RSAKVT and kachingkt.
