Geocache Description:

**Coordinates are NOT for GZ - see below.
My first cache placement. Near where Ponkapoag Golf Course and Pond meet.

Golf course built in 1936 + designed by famed golf architect Donald Ross, although it needs work to reclaim its glory. There is a scenic paved roadway on the right side of the clubhouse lined with beautiful, mature trees. My dad spent countless hours at Ponkapoag pursuing his love of golf. Wish I had taken him up more often on his invitations to play while he was around!

Cache container is a large vitamin bottle wrapped in dark brown tape.
READ THIS>> The coordinates do NOT lead to the cache; they lead to a point on the trail from which you can look into the woods and spot a prominent “foursome.” You're not going to play golf with this foursome, however, so walk directly past them downhill, say another 25 feet.

Easiest way to reach Golf & Pond Junket is to park in the golf course’s large lot on Rt. 138 in Canton and walk up the paved road at the right rear of the parking lot. Where the paved road ends, go left on the dirt trail toward the cache location. You can also park at one of the handful of parking spots at the Ponkapoag Trail / Houghton's Pond exit (Exit 3) off Rt. I-93 and hike in through the trails toward the golf course. Or park on the south side of the pond at a dirt road parking area on Randolph St. in Canton about 1 mile east of Rt. 138, on the left side of the road, and then hike down to the pond and then left along the pond’s edge until you reach the golf course and the trail to the cache.

Note: it can be very buggy in summer, so bring spray if u want and avoid going late in the day when it is even buggier. That's the reason I gave it 2 stars for Terrain. It's a bit brambly underfoot with some scattered poison ivy but not a lot. As of July 24, 2010, the plentiful summersweet shrub was in full bloom in damp areas and very fragrant.

CACHE CONTENTS as of initial placement were:
Logbook
Pen - "Kooky’s Tannenbaum" funny pen (push rubber "hair" down to write)
Golf Ball, Spalding, with name “SALLY”
Golfer’s Pencil (imprinted: “MDC Ponkapoag G.C.)
Golf Tee from John Ascuaga’s Nugget, (Sparks Nevada)
4 tire valve caps (how'd they get in there!?)
Cents of Humor wooden coin from the Lighten Up Club (u can trade)
Light a Life pin (u can trade)

Adjacent Ponkapoag Pond – which you could see ahead of you if you came up the paved road - has two small beaches and is great for hiking around, fishing, canoeing and kayaking. You might want to walk up to the nearby dam and around part of this scenic pond before or after finding the cache. I saw what I believe was a mink emerge from the dam with a frog in its mouth while I was evaluating cache locations! The area also has substantial Native American history and is part of the 6500-acre Blue Hills Reservation with its many miles of hiking, skiing, nature trails, etc.
