[FI] Teollinen toiminta alkoi Nokianvirralla vuori-insinööri Fredrik Idestamin perustettua maan neljännen puuhiomon Emäkosken pohjoisrannalle vuonna 1868.
Pahvin valmistus alkoi 1871, paperin 1880 ja sulfiittiselluloosan 1886. Kanava patoineen sekä turbiinitunneli rakennettiin vuonna 1913 silloista vesivoimalaa varten, ja samalla ne erottivat tehdasalueen saareksi. Saarella sijaitsevat vanhimmat jäljellä olevat Nokia-yhtiölle kuuluneet tehdasrakennukset.
Saari on edelleen toimivaa teollisuusaluetta, joten liikuttaessa on syytä noudattaa varovaisuutta!
[EN] Industrial activity began by the Nokia river where Fredrik Idestam established the country’s fourth groundwood mill on the north bank of the Emäkoski rapids in 1868.
Production of board started in 1871, paper in 1880 and sulphite cellulose in 1886. In 1913 the canal was dammed and a turbine tunnel constructed at the bridge for hydroelectric power which, at the same time, separated the industrial area as an island.
The oldest remaining Nokia company factory buildings are located on this small island that is still a busy industrial centre, so mind the traffic!
