Visnes historiecache #1

I 1985 beviste man at kobberet i Frihetsgudinnen i New York stammer fra Visnes. I dag bruker mange stedet som friluftsområde. Fransahagen ble anlagt av Kobberverkets direktør, Charles de France. Like ved denne parken finner man Gruvemuseumet og kafé.

Visnes history cache #1

Visnes, originally Vigsnes, is a former mining site. Vigsnes Kobberverk was a mining company which was active from 1865 till 1972. There were about 3 000 people living in Visnes. That means that Visnes had a greater population than Haugesund at that time.

In 1985, tests showed that the copper in the Statue of Liberty in New York derives from Visnes. Today, many use the area for leisure. Fransahagen (a park) was built by the company's director; Charles de France. Next to this park there is a mining museum and a cafe.

The given coordinates indicate the beginning of the route. The final coordinates of the cache will be revealed if you manage to solve all the tasks. Simply replace the letters with the corresponding digits you believe are correct. There are a total of 6 tasks.

N 59° 21.ABC E 005°13.DEF

Task A (Waypoint: S1)
Tests have shown that the raw copper in the Statue of Liberty comes from Visnes. As a symbol of the discovery, a miniature model of the statue has been unveiled. The solution to task A is found by summing the first and last digit of the year when the unveiling took place.

Task B (Waypoint: S2)
If you continue west along the gravel path, you will soon pass an old sea mine from World War II. You'll find the solution to task B if you sum the two last digits in the year the mine drifted into Grønneviken. (Due to the non-english information sign, you should know that the first year given is the year the mine drifted into the bay).

Task C (Waypoint: S3)
If you go further northwest on the gravel road, you'll after a while find the smelting facility which was used. The roof and all the equipment were removed when the smelting facility shut down. The solution to task C is found by subtracting the year when this smelting facility ceased from the date when it started. (Due to the non-english information sign, you should know that the first year given is the year the smelting facility started. The next year given is the year the facility shut down). The answer you get is a temporary one. Divide the temporary answer by the number of curved windows / openings on the smelting facility. The answer you then get, is the final solution to task C. Remove the decimals, keep only the integer.

Task D (Waypoint: S4)
Moving further east from the smelting facility, you'll eventually make it to a flat hill consisting of many small rocks. Here you will find an information sign that describes what was done with the earthy waste that surrounded the copper (known as gangue). How many chimneys were connected to the smelting facility? The number of chimneys is the solution to task D.

Task E (Waypoint: S5)
In order to solve the next task, you must go into the woods just north from the info sign. There you'll find the ruins of the hospital used during the mining era in Visnes. The hospital was eventually moved to Haugesund. The solution to task E is found by subtracting the second number from the fourth of the year when the hospital was moved.

Task F (Waypoint: S6)
To find the solution to the last task, you have the choice of two routes:

1) You can continue from the hospital site and go west on the trail that goes down to the bay, then go up the mountain. The route is not suited for everyone, as it involves some climbing.

2) The second option involves going back to Fransahagen (the start point). Then walk into the forest which is to the north. The Waypoint T1 shows the correct direction.

The goal of this task is to reach a land based gun position deriving from World War II. It is located on a hill north of smelting facility. At the land based gun position, you'll be able to see X number of half circles on the ground. The solution to F, the last task, can be found by counting the number of half circles. You have to add 1 to the number of half circles you find. For example: 4 half circles + 1 = 5.

You should now be able to find the final cache by replacing the letters A, B, C, D, E and F with the corresponding digits.
