The Great North Woods are spread across four northeastern U.S.
states: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York and into the
Canadian province of Québec, from the Down East lakes to the
Adirondack Mountains. Collectively, the Great North Woods make up a
26 million acre forestland.
In New Hampshire, the Great North Woods is located at the
northern tip of New Hampshire and includes the northern part of the
White Mountain National Forest. It is an official state tourist
region, located in Coos County, the northernmost county in the
state. The dividing line is loosely defined as running from Cushman
to Berlin and east to the Maine border.
The Great North Woods is also known as the birthplace of the NH
River Rats. Born from a long lineage of Great North Woods rats, the
NH River Rats live along the four Connecticut Lakes which form the
beginning of the Connecticut River.
