This walk takes you to the ancient and beautiful site of St Cybi's
Well, nestling in a valley by a clear mountain stream, and then on
to a trig point at the top of the hill - Garn Bentrych, where the
cache is.
St. Cybi's Well is a beautiful, peaceful and serene location in the
village of Llangybi, Near Pwllheli and Criccieth in North Wales on
the Llyn Peninsula. The well is housed in a small building whose
roof and floors are long gone. The cottage is set with a beautiful
backdrop of a wooded hill. Follow the path from the well through
the woods to a trig point on Garn Bentyrch, a good walk with
spectacular views of the coast and mountains.
St Cybis well, pronounced 'Cubbi' (I think) is an ancient place
used by St.Cybi for healing the sick. The pool is about 8' square
and filled by a beautiful clear stream. The well is inside the
ruined building.
Follow the brown CADW tourist signs to the well, look for the
village of Llangybi. There is parking for two or three cars
adjacent to the brown sign for the site which directs you through a
footpath at N 52° 56.718 W 004° 20.511. Here you walk through an
iron gate, walk down the hill, through the field to an iron kissing
gate, then turn right and walk alongside a not too obvious path
which takes you along the edge of the field marked by low
overhanging trees and bushes which will be on your left, the ground
can be muddy and the field can have cattle grazing. At the end of
the field you walk through two stone gate pillars and you are on a
footpath, follow the path with the stream on your left until you
see the well buildings and see an information sign on the metal
fence for St Cybis Well, in say 200 metres or so.
After visiting the well you need to locate the cache ! Walk up the
path at the rear of the well building to the left. This woodland
path will take you up the hill through a copse with fallen trees
and over a stone wall via a recognised and Waymarked footpath,
through two (sheep) fields and up towards the trig point at the top
of the hill, which is called Garn Bentyrch, and is at 222m. Admire
the coastal and mountain views from the top of the hill.
After you have visited the well and found the cache retrace your
steps to the well, where you can also take the stepped path
opposite the entrance to the well, through a field and to a stile
and gate at the top of some steps that leads into a churchyard. The
path leads through the churchyard and to a slate stile in the wall.
If you turn right here in front of the white cottage the road leads
you back to where you started from, by the brown sign.
