Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden in the woods at the edge of the cemetery and should not be a difficult find.

The village of Rockland was established in 1812 with the building of the Rockland Mill along the shore of the Westconnaug River. By 1906, this small village sported a both a water tower and a hydroelectric dam. As best as I can tell, the site of village was approximately where routes 14 and 12 intersect. Although a portion of the village was above the flood zone, its location in the reservoir watershed sealed the village's fate.

The living residents of Rockland were not the only ones that had to be moved in order to make way for the new reservoir. Each and every grave located within the flood zone was individually dug up and moved to higher ground. In total, there were 2,213 graves located within the condemned area. 728 of them were lucky enough to be outside of the flood zone; of the remaining 1,485 graves, a total of 1,080 of them were moved to a new cemetery, created outside of the flood zone specifically as a final resting place for these lost villagers: the New Rockland Cemetery.
