Geocache Description:

A cache in Boxford State Forest. Here is a trail map for Boxford State Forest and surrounding areas. I have added the trail from P10 myself.

This cache is located at "the three corners" where the towns of Middleton, North Andover, and Boxford meet. The cache is in the woods in Boxford State Forest. The shortest bushwhack is about 0.1 miles from a main trail. However, it may also be reached by longer bushwhacks from other trails in other directions. The bushwhacks are through light forest, but there are some mild hills to climb.

When I saw the intersection of these three towns on the map, I set out to find the spot. I was pleased by what I found. I hope you are, too. There are also at least 5 other caches within easy walking distance of this one (including my cache Return to Cretaceous), and a few more caches a little farther away, so you can make a caching day of it in these woods.

Some very cool old maps:

Here is a map of Boxford from 1795. At that time North Andover had not split from Andover. Can you find the cache location on this map?

Here is a map of Andover from 1795. The South Meeting House is the present location of Andover Center, and the North Meeting House is the present Old North Andover Center. Note also Philips Academy and the "Shawshin River".

And here is a map of Middleton from 1795.

On April 7, 1855 the North parish of Andover split off to become North Andover. Here is a map of Essex County from 1872

Here are maps of Boxford in 1872, North Andover in 1872, and Middleton in 1872. And for completeness, here is a map of Andover in 1872.

Please re-hide the cache well (muggles pass through these woods). Please do not disturb rock walls! The GPS signal bounces around at the cache location, so if you are having problems, please see the detailed hint.

9-7-2014 The plastic lock-n-lock container was replaced with a medium sized ammo can.

Have fun in the woods!

There is an unactivated geocoin as a First To Find prize. Congrats to jwitter for FTF!
