This is a no-cache cache. In other words there is nothing to take and nothing to leave. Several great caches have met their demise in this park at the hands of the ranger. Occoneechee Cave Dweller and Cliffhanger are two such caches. I spoke with the ranger who said leaving a cache without permission amounted to littering. I explained that most geocachers usually hike in and trash out but I don't think it mattered much.
This is such a great park and easily reached from anywhere in RTP, especially the north, that I wanted to share with others. The cache is actually a very unusual tree I noticed one day hiking along the trails. When you reach the coordinates you should easily notice the unusual tree and its "special feature". You'll know for sure when you see a handful of rocks I left to mark the spot. To mark your success, please place a small rock of your own on the marker stone inside the "special feature". Please be very careful if you place your hand in the "feature" as you never know when an animal, e.g. snake, may decide to curl up for a nap. Please see the marker picture below to see what the marker looks like.
Although there isn't any actual cache to find, I hope you take the time to check out this very nice park and trails in Hillsborough. Please be sure to Cache In and Trash Out so we can show the ranger that we take care of the areas where we cache and hopefully will be allowed to hide a real cache here in the future. To verify your find, please read the clue for details on the "special feature", check out the spoiler picture, or email me a description and I'll verify for you.
