Morrison Springs is one of the most popular diving spots in
northwest Florida and well-known throughout the southeast. This
161-acre park was acquired by the state in 2004 and has been leased
to the county to maintain and preserve. There are no admission
charges to use the park or dive in the spring.
Morrison springs is a 250-foot-diameter pool surrounded by
cypress swamp and a thickly wooded floodplain. The small beach
itself shows the remains of cypress stumps from when the area was
timbered. The water is very blue and clear, with excellent
visibility, except in times of high water. The water temperature is
between 67 - 70 degrees. The cave entrance has a large cypress log
across it, the log is at a depth of 25-30 feet, Water from the
spring flows for about a mile before joining the Choctawhatchee
River.
The new Morrison Springs Park includes large boardwalks
overlooking the springs, a diving dock and a new boat ramp away
from the diving location. Handicap parking makes accessibility to
the boardwalks and beach area easier, and bus parking enables large
groups to explore and enjoy the new park amenities. Restrooms with
outdoor showers now make visiting the park more convenient and
welcoming to residents and visitors
The Stage 1 contanier on the dive platform (posted coordinates)
is empty, there is no need to open it or bring it to the surface.
Etched into the container is a number and a direction. The final
cache is offset from the posted coordinates in the direction and
the distance as indicated on the magnetic keyholder BUT you must
SUBTRACT 15 degrees from the direction and ADD 585 to the distance.
Your starting point is the posted coordinates/dive
platform.
The cache is doable without scuba gear, but it might take many
free dives to find stage one as it is hidden from sight and over 20
feet deep, deeper when the water level is higher.
