Geocache Description:

Placed in Wingfoot Lake State Park, Ohio's newest State Park.

You are looking for a small camoed lock-n-lock with room for small trades.
Bring your own writing stick.

This park can be VERY busy on a nice day, so watch out for muggles and low flying disks. And, if you're lucky, you may catch a glimpse of a blimp across the lake at Blimp Base #1.

Permission for placing this cache was given by the
ODNR Ohio State Parks.

Please park in the parking lots and not on the roads.
And, please re-hide the cache as you found it or better. Thanks.

A new update.

The blimp you may see is the newest of the airships. It's not really a blimp, but a a semi-rigid airship. It's fast, able to do 70 MPH, but it's so new it hasn't been given a name yet. Check this out..

A little history.

The State of Ohio's newest park Wingfoot Lake (map), it's 74th, opened in 2010 and contains 121.2 acres of land and sits next to a lake by the same name, where the state owns 444 acres — about 90 percent of the lake.

In addition, there is 569.3 acres of state wildlife area for hunting and fishing. That includes 125 acres of land east of the state park plus the state-controlled lake waters the Division of Wildlife will manage. Two boat ramps have been improved and two new parking lots with room for 40 to 50 vehicles have been added.

The lake — up to 15 feet deep with 13.4 miles of shoreline — should provide good quality bass and catfish fishing. The state intends to stock the lake annually with channel catfish that are 9 inches or larger.

Goodyear purchased the lake, which drains into the Little Cuyahoga River, in 1916 to provide water for its Akron rubber operations. And, retains 128 acres on the lake's southern edge for its blimp operations and hangar. The Wingfoot Lake Airship Base, sometimes called "The Kitty Hawk of Lighter-Than-Air," is the oldest airship base in the United States. The Spirit of Goodyear blimp is based here.

In 1917, Goodyear contracted with the U.S. Navy to build nine blimps for reconnaissance missions at the Wingfoot plant during World War I. More than 600 military cadets received flight instruction and related training at the Wingfoot Lake facility during the war.

Goodyear used the park as a recreation spot for their employees and closed it in 2006, saying it was not worth the cost to maintain and operate the site.

Wingfoot Lake was purchased by the State of Ohio in 2009, and is the first new state park in Northeast Ohio since Lake Milton opened in 1988. Ohio acquired parcels on Middle Bass Island in Lake Erie for Ohio's 73rd state park in 2000-2001.
