De Molen van Sloten is een functionerende poldermolen en tevens de enige voor het publiek dagelijks toegankelijke molen in Amsterdam. De molen ligt aan de rand van de stad, bij de Ringvaart, en zorgt ervoor dat het waterpeil in de lager liggende omgeving onder een bepaald niveau blijft. Het is een stellingmolen met een hier herbouwde achtkant uit 1847. Het hele jaar is de molen dagelijks vanaf 10.00 uur te bezichtigen (uitgezonderd nieuwjaarsdag, koninginnedag en de kerstdagen). De Molen van Sloten heeft een lift, zodat ook ouderen en gehandicapten tot op de omloop (stelling) kunnen komen. Een aantal vrijwillige medewerkers geeft graag alle uitleg tijdens de rondleiding. En als het even kan, laat de molenaar zien hoe hij de molenkap met de wieken op de wind kruit, de wieken laat draaien of juist stopzet, of hoe hij de zeilen zet in de wieken. Kortom, een bezoek meer dan waard!
Naast de molen staat het kuiperijmuseum. In het Kuiperijmuseum is een authentieke werkplaats nagebouwd. In een audiovisuele presentatie en op sfeerfoto's kunt u hier zien hoe de houten vaten werden gemaakt. Vaten werden gebruikt voor opslag, verpakking en transport van diverse producten, zoals kaas, vis, bier, olie en zeep. Anno nu worden vaten nog gebruikt voor bv wijn en cognac. Het kuiperijmuseum is open van 10.00-17.00 uur.
The Sloten Windmill is a tower mill, with an octagon from 1847. It is the only mill in Amsterdam that is accessible to the public. The mill lies on the outskirts of Amsterdam, at the ring canal and sees to it that the water level in the lower lying surroundings remains below a specific level. Throughout the year this polder draining mill, which is still functioning, can be visited daily from 10 am. ( with the exception of 1st January, 30th April (Queens' Day) and 25/26th December). The Sloten Mill has a lift, so that also elderly people and physically handicapped will be able to visit the gallery (balcony). With pleasure a number of voluntary co-workers explain everything during the guided tour through the mill. And if it is at all possible, the miller shows how he turns the mill cap so that the vanes face the wind, how he let the vanes rotate or on the contrary stops them, or how he puts the sails in the vanes. next to the mill you'll find the Coopery museum.This museum is unique in the Netherlands as it is the only place where coopery crafts can still be seen. Wooden casks were used for packing, transport and storage of products such as salted fish, meat, cheese, beer and onions. Wine and cognac are nowadays the best known examples for which wooden casks are still used.?Our museum has brought to life the old handicraft. You will find an authentic workshop with all the special needed tools. Open 10.00- 17.00 h.
