Geocache Description:

Pint sized cache hidden at memorial to forgotten Civil Was general.

Often while exploring the more remote areas of the state we come across memorials to long forgotten patriots. These individuals must have been held in high regard for their contemporaries to remember them in this way. I believe it was also their intent to cause us to stop and reflect on their contributions and achievements as well. One such individual was Stephen Thomas who went to the Civil War as a colonel of the famous VT 8th Infantry Brigade which is memorialized by the famous painting of the Battle of Cedar Creek in the room of the same name at the VT Statehouse.
Thomas received the Congressional Medal of Honor at that battle and mustered out as a general in 1865. Thomas left VT for the war as a Democrat however returned as a Republican. As such he often found himself the adversary of his former political colleagues. It is said that on one occasion they chastised him saying, "But Thomas you've changed, we have not." It is said he replied, "Fools never do."
His postwar life included service to the state as lt. governor as well as founding and operating the VT Clothespin Factory. If you would like to find out more about him it is quite easy with a quick google search. Hope you enjoy the cache
