Geocache Description:

This cache is dedicated to all the Nancy’s out there who are cachers (and there are quite a few of us!!).

The cache is located along the Nancy Pond Trail in Harts Location, NH. Hike up the trail along Nancy Brook to Nancy Cascade. The trail takes a sharp left hand turn (look for an orange blaze on a tree) and then it is a little over 1 mile to Nancy Pond. The cache is an ammo box located on the right side of the trail on a small height of land. It is about 30 feet from the trail. There is a nice view of Nancy Pond on the left side of the trail. If you want more adventure you can continue along the trail and Summit Mt. Nancy, 3881’.

This is the Legend of Nancy Brook:
In the White Mountains below Crawford Notch off US 302 is the Nancy Pond Trail. About 21/2 miles from the road are the Nancy Cascades formed by Nancy Brook rushing from Nancy Pond. And here is the tragic story of Nancy. In 1797, the town of Jefferson, New Hampshire was purchased by the wealthy Colonel Joseph Whipple, the first settler to pass north through White Mountain Notch (Crawford Notch, today). He had roads built, erected a forge and hired many locals. He also employed an Irish girl, Nancy Barton, to work as a domestic in his mansion. Nancy was a pretty girl with an equally pleasing temperament. Eligible bachelors from all over sought to win her heart but Nancy remained fancy free, until several years later. On this particular day, a counterfeiter escaped from prison in Rochester and fled to the mountains. He was found several days later, sick and hungry and was taken to the colonel's house where Nancy nursed him back to health. Struck by his handsome looks and social graces, Nancy gradually lost her heart to the rogue. Although he treated her with affection, her deeper love was not reciprocated and Nancy gradually became despondent. Things became more difficult when he recuperated and accepted a position as bookkeeper at the colonel's house. While perusing the accounting books, he discovered that Nancy was credited with a large sum of money for back wages. With this in mind, he courted the love struck Nancy and they soon made plans to marry. The colonel, delighted that the young Nancy was soon to be wed, paid Nancy the money and gave her a gold and pearl brooch as a wedding gift. Overjoyed by his generosity Nancy ran to share the gift with her fiancé. He suggested Nancy travel to Lancaster the next day to purchase a wedding dress. He would hold the balance of the money until her return. When she returned, he and his belongings and the money were gone. The one item left behind was the pouch that had contained her wages. Nancy rushed blindly out of the house resolving to catch up with him. Though poorly clad. Nancy managed to tramp over 20 miles down into the notch, ignoring the heavily falling snow. When she crossed the Saco River, her clothes got wet. Exhausted and cold, Nancy collapsed in the snow, where a search party from Jefferson found her, frozen, the next day by a brook - hence. Nancy Brook.
