Geocache Description:

This is a quick drive and grab assuming the gate is open. Otherwise it may be a bit of a walk down a beautiful gravel road.

A few thousand years ago (a blink when compared to the age of the earth) this part of the world was covered under a massive ice sheet. I have heard it was two miles thick - that would leave Mt. Washington under about a mile of ice. We are told that as the ice sheet melted it left boulders that were frozen somewhere in the two miles scattered on the earthen floor. This boulder appears to be one of those. Unfortunately for the boulder, it had a small imprefection that allowed water to seep in and stay there until winter came and it froze. As we all know when water freezed it expandes and can exert a great force on anything trying to hold it in. Over time the crack was enlarged allowing more water to get in, freezing and enlarging the crack. After many years the crack grew so large that the rock was forced to split.
This cache is located at this interesting site in a beautiful state park.

As a note - Bear Brook State Park charges a fee when it is open in the summer.
