4.23. Unarchiving a Geocache

The archiving of a geocache is intended to be a permanent status. That is why only community volunteer reviewers and Geocaching HQ staff have the capability to unarchive it. This is done only in rare circumstances and only if it meets the current Geocache Listing Guidelines.

If a geocache is archived by a reviewer or staff for lack of maintenance it will not be unarchived.

Geocache Description:

About the cache and its placement

The cache is not at the listed location

History of the site

During the 1880s a torpedo station was erected this site. The establishment, here, of a Torpedo Station was really just a (over?)reaction to the perceived threat of the Russian Navy. This station grew over the following years and by 1891 the crew of a colonial warship were stationed here. It was intended that the torpedo station would protect Port Adelaide in the event of hostilities by placing a boom of heavy chains across the river: this could be protected by a gun battery.

The station finally acquired a torpedo boat in 1905, long after the station's establishment.

The torpedo station was closed and dismantled during 1917. The remants of the blackwood post at the specified location is one of the few remaining features of this station still visable at the site.

OK. Now for the puzzle

Step 1: Solve the "battleships" puzzle

Just like the old game of battleships, your task is to find the vessels in the grid. Some parts of the boats or sea squares have already been filled in, and a number next to a row or column refers to the number of occupied squares in that row or column. The boats may be postioned horizontally or vertically, but no two boats or parts of boats are in adjacent squares - horizontally, vertically or diagonally.

Step 2: Solve the anagram

Write down all the partial-coordinates (top-left) and letters (bottom-right) that are positioned in a square with part of a boat (make sure you keep them associated with each other). You must re-arrange the letters to form two words that have a particular relevance to the site (eg "blackwood post"). Once you have solved the anagram the associated co-ordinates will be in the right order. Make sure you place the vowels that have multiples (eg "i") in order (ie ascending order: place the lowest value first, and the one with the highest number associated with it last). Oh, and watch out, you have two extra letters (and therefore co-ords) that you dont need!

Step 3: Check

The sum of the digits for the SOUTH set should be 20. The sum of the first five digits in the EAST set should be 23.

Step 4: Go get the cache

You now have the co-ordinates Go get the cache.
