Medes.
Altrough the most popular image of the Montgrí is the Montgrí
Mountain with the castle at the top, Montgrí is much larger THAN
that: Spreads between the towns of l'Escala, Bellcaire d'Empordà,
Ullà, Torroella de Montgrí and l'Estartit, and covers the Montgrí
Massif (who gives it the name), the Great Mountain, the Dunes and
the Medes Islands.
El Massís del
Montgrí / The Montgrí Massif
The Montgrí massif is a limestone outcrop, it is high for a fault
oriented east to west, which was formed at same period as the
mountains of the Pyrenees. In some places there are magmatic
intrusions of quartz red or brown. As a karst terrain can be found
in numerous caves, sinkholes and holes in the walls of mountains
called dens of "Duc", probably because they often nest the "Ducs",
a native species of owls in the area.
D'oest a est hi destaquen els següents cims: Muntanya d'Ullà (308
i el Montplà (311 m), propers a Torroella, i la Torre Moratxa (218
m) i Roca Maura (226 m), propers a l'Estartit.
From west to east there are the following peaks: Ullà Mountain (308
m), Montgrí (301 m), on which there is the castle Montgrí, and
Montplà (311 m), near Torroella, and Moratxa Tower (218 m) and Roca
Maura (226 m), close to l'Estartit. Already in the sea, the
archipelago of the Medes Islands, is actually the most eastern
extension of the massif.
Relleu càrstic /
Karst topography
subterrani.
The karst is a way of modeling land caused by water through erosion
by chemical weathering, is typical of areas with the presence of
limestone or other soluble carbonate rocks. Presents
characteristics of corrosion surface formations such as sinkholes
and "rasclers"(no he trobat traducció per a aquesta paraula :) ),
or underground like caves and chasms, and the drainage system is
largely underground.
The word karst has its origins in the germanization (karst) the
name of the Slovenian region of Kras during the country's
integration within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Kras region is
an example of modeling with limestone plateaus characteristic of
karst. The concept of karst was introduced in 1893 by Jovan Cvijic
in his book Das Karstphänomen (The karst phenomenon).
orgànica en fermentació i forma àcid carbònic
(H2CO3).
The karstification is the set of processes that generate a model
karst. These processes depend on the amount of water and carbon
dioxide (CO2) available, the climate and the type of
rock. The fundamental process of karstification is the weathering
of limestone or carbonate for dissolution, but the calcium
carbonate (CaCO3) is not very soluble in water. For the
chemical reaction that dissolves the calcium carbonate should occur
that the water is acidic, the acidity is achieved when the carbon
dioxide (CO2) dissolves in rain water from the
atmosphere or fermentation of organic matter and form carbonic acid
(H2CO3).
The chemical reactions responsible for the dissolution of
carbonates are the following:
Dissolució del diòxid de carboni:
Dissolution of carbon dioxide:
H2O + CO2 ↔
H2CO3
La dissociació aquosa de l'àcid carbònic:
The dissociation of aqueous carbonic acid:
H2CO3 + H2O ↔ H3O+
+ HCO3-
Atac àcid dels carbonats:
Acid attack of the carbonates:
H3O+ + CaCO3 ↔
Ca2+ + HCO3- +
H2O
Reacció completa:
Full Reaction:
CO2 + H2O + CaCO3 ↔
Ca2+ + 2 HCO3-
The dissolution is favored by: the abundance of water; the
CO2 content in the water, the origin of atmospheric
pressure increases; the temperature drops, as is the colder water
can hold more CO2; beings things that generate
CO2 during respiration; the nature of the rock
composition of carbonates and the presence of fractures; the
contact time of the rock with water.
A region cold, wet and limestone is more likely to develop a karst
relief, however modeling karst is in all the land, also in warm and
humid regions.
Les Illes Medes /
The Medes Islands
flora marina.
The Medes Islands are an archipelago of 21.5 hectares which is
located just over a mile of the coast of Estartit. This consists of
seven islets and sone reef. The seven islands are, from larger to
smaller: the Meda Gran (18,7 ha), the Meda Xica (2,6 ha), the
Cavall Bernat, the Tascons Grossos, the Medellot, the Tascons
Petits and the Ferrenelles. The archipelago is actually the
continuation of the Montgrí Massif. It is one of the most important
areas of natural interest in the Mediterranean, being a large
marine fauna and flora reserve. To enjoy the fauna and flora you
will have to dive, that's why we put the boat and diving gear
icons, but the immersion is not really necessary in order to log it
as found.
La Muntanya Gran /
The Big Mountain
Big Mountain is called the plateau is to the north and northeast of
Massif, but also part of Montgrí.
The largest area of land of the plateau is the Plan of Milan and
they have some peaks, such as nougat Puig (171m), Puig de la Palma
(146m), the Roc Ferran Puig d'en Leial, Puig Puig of sand or
Sec.
Big Mountain also covers the whole coastline with cliffs and small
coves. They include the cliffs of Punta del Milan, Punta Ventosa,
the Miradones, Punta Three Caves, the Salto del Pastor, the Head
Castle (Horadada on the Rock), Punta de la Cadena, Punta de la
Sardine, Cape Ultrera or Punta Gorda and the Punta del Triaire.
Among highlights in the coves of Cala Montgo, Ferriol and Cala Cala
Pedrosa.
Les Dunes /
The Dunes
forestal.
It can be difficult to imagine that the green corridor of 6 km long
and 213 hectares, comprising the coastal forests that begin north
of St. Martin Empúries and continue to pine forests to the
continental Great Mountain at Torroella Montgrí, obeys a
performance anthropic forest engineering.
amenaçaven de sepultar camps i masos. Per això, al voltant del 1900
es va prendre la decisió de fixar-les.
The sand came from the beach of the Gulf of Roses and were swept by
the "Tramuntana" (wind blowing from the north with intensity in
this area) until reaching the height of the Reixach's garden, when
started to be a danger because it threatened to bury fields and
farms. So around 1900, it has been decided to fix them.
posteriorment.
The subject, by the engineer Primitiu Artigas i Teixidor, was
planted in this area, first grasses to exert a short term fix and
give protection to pine and pine seedlings that there were sown
later.
les robínies i el pollancre.
The vegetation of the dunes is dominated by three types of pins
used for fixation: the stone pine, Aleppo pine and pinaster. Also
you can find some other tree species, such as rubies and
poplar.
The undergrowth is sparse and is composed of shrubs such as
rosemary, steppes, mastic, the buckthorn, the figuerasses, yarrow
... Also there is a layer composed mainly by grass, asparagus, the
everlasting barking, etc..
Què és una Duna? /
What is a Dune?
A dune is an accumulation of sand on which the wind acted as
producing a smooth and uniform. They can be caused by changes in
the wind or by variations in the amount of sand. The grain of sand
that forms dunes, also called sand wind, is very concentrated
around 0.2 mm diameter of their particles.
When the wind has a dominant direction, the dunes take the form of
a C with the convex side against the wind. These dunes generally
advance, pushed by the wind. The speed of advance of the dunes is
inversely proportional to its size, so small dunes trap the
biggest, with which they were merging and increasing in size. When
the dune reaches a size significantly more than 4 to 6 meters,
begins to discard much of material on both ends of the C, giving
rise to new dunes small, which to be faster than large, they were
away from the mother dune. (This phenomenon can be seen very
clearly in Sechura desert in northern Peru).
industrials usats.
The movement of the dunes can cause serious problems, such as the
invasion of cultivated land, obstruction of roads, populated areas
of employment. To avoid these problems there are several procedures
to limit the advance of the dunes, including planting plants that
require little water to survive, removal of atmospheric humidity;
spray materials, binders in the convex part of the dune, as may be
oil and industrial oils used.
Com registrar-lo / How to log it
In order to log it as found, you will have to send a message to
MariSky or to me, with the answers to the following questions:
1. The ston from the Montgrí is very appreciated for construction,
as evidenced by the fact that there is a quarry in the Ullà
Mountain, between Ullà and Bellcaire. The stone is gray in his
outher face, but what color is seen in the hole that was made due
to the quarry? (No need to go to any specific point to check it,
you'll see it from the road in the way to Torroella both from
Verges or l'Escala)
aquestes lletres?
2. This utility for the construction was already known long ago,
and it is apparent that Montgrí own castle was built with stone
taken from the mountain itself. At the foot of the castle one can
see what were the quarries. One of these quarries is indicated with
a beam of iron fixed to the ground, with the letters "Pedrera"
(Quarry) written vertically. What color are these letters?
3. At the coordinates N 42° 3.505' E 3° 8.980' (next to the house
of forest) is a poster explaining the process of fixing the
continental dune conducted by Primitiu Artigues i Teixidor. In the
poster is a photograph showing the progression of the dune.
According to the caption on the dune which irrigation was the dune
on?
4. (Optional) If you've had the opportunity to immerse yourself in
the Medes: What color is the few coral remaining there?
Most of the translations to english were made using automatic
