Geocache Description:

You do not need to cross the creek. From the parking lot at Stone and College N43 30.545 W80 14.963, take the trail off of Stone. It runs east, then follow the pink blazed main trail south west towards the Speed River. If you take the Crane Park (dog park) trail you will have to cross a shallow creek - wear waterproof boots with non-slip soles.

My first true letterbox hybrid. I was inspired by Rick on the Range's hybrid box in Owen Sound and Rideau Rangers' hybrid in Mississauga.

You'll find an ammo can with the letterbox portion in its own container. Plenty of room in the ammo can for trinkets.

Bring your own ink. I've left a few pre-printed cards for those who didn't bring ink but want to start collecting images. Please let me know when there's only one pre-printed card left.

The box is called Winter because

  • it was planted in the winter, for OPAL (Ontario Plant a (Winter) Letterbox) Day,
  • this wetland forest is a great place for a winter walk - lots of prominent winter trails
  • the stamp depicts a winter forest scene.

I designed the image and hand-carved the stamp myself. Please do not take the stamp. It must remain in the box.

The box is located by the back of the old Kortright Waterfowl Park. The park, established in 1956, was named in honor of Frank H. Kortright, founder of the Canadian National Sportsmen's Show. You can still see the layout of the park with fences, benches, boardwalks and ponds. Note the tall deer fencing - along with waterfowl there were/are many deer in the park. Guelph's Kortright Waterfowl Park was for 50 years a place to experience nature in a tranquil setting, with almost 1,000 waterfowl representing nearly 100 species from around the world. The park closed in 2006 but remains a sanctuary.

Important: this area is a provincial wetland. It will likely be flooded during winter and spring thaws. I will do my best to report on trail conditions. If the rivers and creeks are full and/or overflowing some of the trails may be impassable until the waters subside.

Please cover the hiding spot well with the wood chunks that are currently covering the box and stump.

Averaged 100 times with a Garmin 60Cx.
