No ano
de 1534 a esposa de Henrique VIII, Rainha de Inglaterra, deu ordem
para serem deitadas ao mar todas as imagens sagradas, devido às
lutas religiosas tidas.
Julga-se que terá sido este o início da lenda e da crença no Senhor
Jesus das Chagas. Mas o mar tem das suas e, a imagem de Jesus
crucificado, apareceu na praia de Sesimbra.
O povo desde logo apadrinhou O Senhor Jesus das Chagas, como
padroeiro dos pescadores e do povo de
Sesimbra.
Esta devoção está bem viva há mais de 500 anos, e os sesimbrenses
prestam assim homenagem ao seu protector todos os anos a 4 de
Maio.
Na Capela da Misericórdia encontra-se a Imagem do Senhor Jesus das
Chagas desde a sua aparição na praia de Sesimbra em 1534, donde sai
anualmente para a Igreja matriz, para se efectuar as tradicionais
festividades.
Essa capela situa-se no "grande" jardim de Sesimbra. O nome oficial
do largo é '5 de Outubro', mas é mais conhecido como "o
jardim". Na zona mais alta do largo encontra-se
o edifício da "Escola Conde Ferreira", primeiro estabelecimento de
ensino de Sesimbra (1866). No centro do jardim desenvolve-se uma
araucária.

garden). In the zone highest of the plaza the
building of the “Escola Conde Ferreira”, first
educational establishment of Sesimbra (1866). In the center of the
garden an araucária is developed.
