Geocache Description:

Micro hidden in ruins of old desert fort ("Emedir") overlooking the N10 highway to Tinerhir, location is on Quarternary flood basalts that may be used by ESA for testing space equipment.

Lunar maria are large flood basalts on the Moon... this area in southern Morocco is a flood basalt (roughtly 20m thick) laind down on top of prior existing sedimentary layers. As such, it is a good candidate analog site for testing equipment for future lunar or Mars missions. The flow extends toughly 10km southward. On one basalt-capped mesa overlooking the N12 highway, there is a ruined kasbah. Cache is a screwtop micro with a logsheet and a set of earrings.

Turnoff from the N12 is at N31 26.105' , W 05 39.270' . Drive up about 1km switchbacks on an easy grade to park in front of the kasbah and on the basalt layer. There are panoramic views.
