Geocache Description:

This cache is placed at the Nine Daughters Hole in Ballybunion. The cache involves a short cliff walk from the parking coordinates. The cache is a small orange cylindrical container. The walk is suitable for children but please be sensible and don't cross any of the barriers (except maybe for a quick peek down the hole itself) .

I have been coming to this spot since I was very small with my parents and cousins. My mother grew up in Ballybunion and she often told me the story of the hole.

This is the version I know : There once was a widower with nine daughters and no sons. He was a lonely man and wanted his daughters to continue living with him for the rest of his life. He treated them very poorly though and made them clean for him and cook all his meals. As they all grew up he began to worry about them getting married and leaving him. One day after his youngest daughter got a beau, as had all the others, he hatched a plan. He summoned each of his daughters lovers and brought them up the cliffs. There he made a deal with them; whoever caught the ring he held would be given permission to propose to one of his daughters. He threw the ring into the air toward the hole. The nine boyfriends all followed it down and drowned.
After seeing this, the broken-hearted daughters decided to jump to their deaths also and lie with their lost lovers. They plunged in and drowned in the arms of their lifeless suitors.
Sometimes if you are on the cliffs alone at night, you can here the nine maids weeping between the crashing of the waves at the cliffs.
Dolphins are around nearly every time i've been here so keep an eye out for them!
The cliffs have great views of the nuns beach, the ladies beach and the Virgin Rock. You can also see Loop Head and the coast of Co.Clare in the distance on a fine day.
The hole itself is a blowhole , during stormy weather the splashes sometimes reach the top but not very often. Enjoy your walk
