Powerful Chemical Conundrum 12 Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Barad Bunch: Unfortunately this mystery multicache needs to be archived. There were three caches involved - two of them are no longer there and the third one has been vandalised and relocated from its original hiding spot to where another of the caches was hidden. There seems little point in trying to maintain these caches because they appear to be well known and disliked by the local non-cached fraternity. Additionally the general area is more degraded than I remember it being when the caches were originally placed; there is now considerable rubbish there including broken glass. Vale Powerful Chemical Conundrum 12 and Mossy Mystery 01.
Addendum: a new version of Powerful Chemical Conundrum 12 has been created and Mossy Mystery 01 lives on.

Geocache Description:

Powerful Chemical Conundrums

This series of progressively more complicated mystery caches is based in southern Tasmania. A feature of the series is that no waypoint is available for any of the caches. Each cache is located near an electrical distribution pole or tower ("Powerful"). To find the coordinates of the pole or tower you will need to solve puzzles based on chemistry ("Chemical Conundrums"). Each pole or tower has an identifying label attached to it. You will require this information to solve one or more puzzles to discover where the cache is relative to the pole or tower.

More explanatory information is given in the earlier members of the series (PCC 01 to PCC 10). It is recommended that at least some of these should be completed before attempting the more difficult final members (starting with PCC 11).

Special bonus: each of these final conundrums reveals information that can be used to locate a cache in the Wellington's Seldom Seen Sites series.

POWERFUL CHEMICAL CONUNDRUM 12 - West Moonah

This mystery multi-stage cache is located in a public park in West Moonah. The first cache is not at the listed coordinates. To find it you will need to solve a chemistry-based puzzle. The area is partly under tree cover and this will probably interfere with GPSR reception.

Part 1
This puzzle features sodium, a reactive metal and a component, in ionic form, of common salt.
Let z = atomic number of sodium (z is an integer).

Several streets in West Moonah are named after numbers, e.g. Third Avenue. There is also an avenue related to the number z. Go to the south-eastern end of that avenue (at the "dead end"). There you will find an Aurora power pole with a label "Aurora abcd72" (a, b, c and d are integers). We will call this "Pole A".

Locate another pole bearing the same wires that has a label "Aurora abcd68", we will call this "Pole B". Note: this pole is also in a street and not the park.

Part 2
The first cache in this multi-cache puzzle is hidden in the nearby park. It is located at a bearing of x degrees from Pole A and at a bearing of y degrees from Pole B where:
  • x = (a * 100) + (c * 10) - a - d
  • y = (c - d) * 100 + (c * 10) - (d * 2)
Parts 3...
The first cache contains information that leads to the second cache and so on until the final cache is found. All caches are located in the public park (reserve).

The Final Cache
The last cache in this sequence contains a log book and pen. There are no "swaps", instead there is information that will enable you to find the companion cache "Mossy Mystery 01" GC2V8R8 a member of the Wellington's Seldom Seen Sites series.
