Gargrave Feels the Hunter Gatherer Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

geoartcache: I have collected this cache so that the logs can contribute to the final story of the magical creature of the Yorkshire Dales - who I'm writing about in my research. The rest of the Hunter Gatherer caches in the Yorkshire Dales finished 2 years ago, and this legacy cache has continued to have regular visits with people recording what they noticed and felt in this place, and, sometimes, how they imagine the magical creature of the Dales to be....
Thanks to everyone who has contributed over the 3 years since this cache went live.

More Hunter Gatherer magical creature geo-art-caches are planned for later this year in other parts of England and the world!

Geocache Description:

A Hunter Gatherer geoartcache, interacting with a magical creature living in the Yorkshire Dales over summer 2011.

A traditional cache with a difference - sound whispers in the box, an invitation to contribute using the Hunter Gatherer iphone app, photo, text or email, plus a cache key to unlock short films and more of the story at http://www.gatherer3.com

The cache is situated near the canal, along a footpath near the small town of Gargrave.

A Hunter Gatherer geoartcache, interacting with a magical creature living in the Yorkshire Dales. Over summer 2011 five Hunter Gatherer caches in the Yorkshire Dales will come to life at different times, when the magical creature comes to visit. If you listen, you may hear whispers of it’s song, or see glimmers of its movement. And it listens to you…

The caches play with sound, colour and text to gather responses from the hunters – you!
Hunter Gatherer explores the magic of digital media, geocaching and art – invoking the magical creature of our imagination.
As hunters find the cache and send in their responses, the creature is sung into life.

The magical creature responds to colours and patterns of shimmering light, feeling its way through the Dales, navigating by the cycles of the sun and moon.
What will you feel when you find the cache?

This is a traditional cache with a difference - sound whispers in the box, an invitation to contribute to the story by logging what you notice at this cache site.

When you find the cache you’ll be invited to respond by using a simple colour and Q&A structure. Send this to us and include the 5 digit 'cache key' you'll find in the box - so we know if you (and the magical creature) were really there!
There's lots of different ways to play: audio buttons in the cache box, QR codes, use the free specially made Hunter Gatherer iphone app*, send responses by text* or email*, or take a camera to photograph and use the crayons and 'colour grid' log books ...

You can also use the cache key to discover more about the creature and unlock a short film made using the responses gathered from you and the other hunters at (visit link)

Please respect the cache, keep it dry, and leave everything in the box for the next visitors to use. Thankyou.

There's a QR code in the cache: if you have a phone with camera and internet access, you may want to install a QR reader so that you can use this feature. (An internet search for 'your make/model of phone + QR reader' should find appropriate software, often free.)*

The cache is a little way out of the small town of Gargrave, which can be reached by public transport and has a train station.
The cache is situated alongside the canal where road, water and towpath coincide.: Bridge 172. You're looking for a medium-sized plastic lunch-box, hidden within easy reach of the footpath. The path itself is suitable for pushchairs etc but access from the closest road (Ray Bridge Lane) is via a narrow entrance and steep steps – so a longer walk may be easier than a cache and dash!
Please be aware of the proximity of the water and of all kinds of traffic - keep children and animals under close control.

Hunter Gatherer in a Nutshell
When you find the Hunter Gatherer hidden caches:
- upon opening the box, listen to see if you've found the magical creature which moves from cache to cache
- instead of the usual geocaching logbook, you'll find a colour grid to log your response (all the colour grid responses will feed back to form the animated film content)
- make a note of the 'Cache Key' or use your phone to scan the QR code, this will take you to the website to view the short film about the creature

*Note: phone coverage and data roaming (internet connection) are required for full use on location. You're likely to get a signal near the cache, if not you can still use your mobile device on site and connect later over a wifi connection or in a different area where signal is stronger.
