Postovaara hill about 30 kilometres northwest of Sodankylä town. At 379 metres high one of the highest peaks in Sodankylä area. The trip takes couple of hours and requires some hiking experience.
This geocache is located near the summit of Postovaara hill. At 379 metres it stands out of the local topography dominated by swamps (more specifically aapa mires, a wet swamp type common in this part of Lapland). The hill offers good views to the surrounding area. The adjacent pahtavaara gold mine can be seen from Postovaara hill.
Postovaara and nearby Sattasvaara hill can described as sisters, they share similar shape and nearly the same height (370 and 379 metres). They are also geologically similar, since both are made of komatiite (a rock type). Also, both sites now host a geocache!
A dirt road leads to the flank of the mountain, but ascent must be made by foot. The road is named Postovaarantie and it has a junction to the west with a road sign just north of Kersilö village along the Highway 4. The first part of the road is in fair condition, with some potholes. After five kilometers of driving (coordinates 67° 37.408N 26° 37.61E) there are some rougher sections, but the road is still driveable by a normal car if driven carefully. You may choose to leave you car at the above mentioned point (there is space for parking), but then you have have to walk some five kilometres along the road.
The road ends next to the hill, where you can park you car (coordinates 67° 38.822N 26° 31.521E). From the car park there is one kilometre walk to the top of the hill (straight line). There are no clear paths to the top of the hill, some forest trails circumvent the hill. Choose your route to the top, bearing in mind that the hill is quite steep in many places. The entire hill is rocky, good hiking boots are highly recommended. Also, walk carefully, especially if the ground is wet/slippery.
Getting here by public transport is not practical, the nearest bus stop is located in Kersilö village.

Postovaaran juurelle pääsee Postavaarantietä pitkin, jonka risteys on nelostiellä hieman Kersilön pohjoispuolella. Tie lähtee länteen päin ja on viitoitettu. Tämä on 10 kilometrin mittainen hiekkatie ja on pääosin kohtuukunnossa. Viiden kilometrin jälkeen on joitakin huonompikuntoisia osia, mutta tien pääsee loppuun asti henkilöautolla varovasti ajaen. Tien lopussa on kääntöympyrä, josta on linnuntietä kilometri Postovaaran huipulle. Valitse parhaaksi katsomasi reitti huipulle, valmista polkua kun ei ole. Postovaara on varsin jyrkkä ja hyvin kivinen (rakkaa), hyvät vaelluskengät ovat erittäin suositeltavat. Varovaisuus kunniaan varsinkin jos kivet on liukkaita (esim sateen jälkeen).
