Geocache Description:

The Trustees of Reservations is the nation’s oldest Land Trust, founded in 1891. They preserve for public use and enjoyment properties of scenic, historic, and ecological value in Massachusetts and work to protect special places across the state. The non-profit group owns or protects over 50,000 acres in Massachusetts including over 100 reservations, all open to the public.

Dexter Drumlin, formerly known as Kilbourn Hill is a 311-foot drumlin and a 38 acre open space reservation in Lancaster, Massachusetts as part of the Trustees of Reservations.

A Drumlin is an oval or elongated hill believed tohave been formed by the streamlined movement of glacial ice sheets across rock debris, or till. The name is derived from the Gaelic word druim (“rounded hill,” or “mound”). Drumlins are generally found in broad lowland regions, with their long axes roughly parallel to the path of glacial flow. Although they come in a variety of shapes, the glacier side is always high and steep, while the lee side is smooth and tapers gently in the direction of ice movement.

Dexter Drumlin is composed of glacial till (rocks and finely ground material carried by a glacier, then deposited when the ice melted). But, drumlins may vary greatly in their composition. Some contain significant amounts of gravels, whereas others are made up of rock underlying the surface till (rock drumlins).

To Claim this EarthCache complete the following task and PM your answers.

1)from the lowest point of the southern side of the Drumlin calculate the slope of the hill. What is it's grade?

2)from the lowest point of the northern side, calculate the slope of the hill. What is it's grade? In order to calculate the slope, you need to know the change in elevation and the distance the change in elevation takes place over.

3)Which direction was the glacier moving in this area based on the drumlin's grade.

4) What shape does this drumlin take according to the kiosk at the parking coordinates?
