Spooks Canyon Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Calipers: Dug and I are archiving this cache because we feel it is the right thing to do. The area around the final to the series was severely damaged from fire, turning this spot into an eerie and baren moonscape. Even if we were to arrange a pile of rocks to hide a cache under, the last thing this spot needs is a handful of well minded geocachers wandering over terrain that badly needs to heal. The 46 finds (and 25 favorite points!) far exceeded our expectations for such an out of the way series. Cheers to you cachers out there who just love to trek the trail less traveled. You are our kind of people.

Geocache Description:

The Questhaven area is home to many mysteries, urban legends, and folklore. During the day, it is breathtakingly beautiful, with vistas of awesome natural beauty. At night and on some misty mornings, it is as spooky as a place can get. Day or night, the time you plan on visiting is up to you, but we take no responsibility if you come face to face with everything from jackrabbits in the bush (that startle the wit out of you when you least expect it) to the supernatural. Or worse – some deviant with an evil and ne’re-do-well disposition. The trail is not frequently traveled and you might find the most creepy part is being out there just . . . so . . . damn . . . alone. One hopes.

This trail will lead you down into Spooks Canyon where rumors surrounding the area abound, yet it is difficult to pin down real facts. Former residents swear that there was once an insane asylum long since burned down. At that site, rumors of human sacrifices have been reported. Over the years, dozens of teens that planned on mischief have been scared out of their wits and never went back. A religious retreat lies near the end of the trail, formed by a Christian Mystic named Flower, whose original mission was to communicate with real life angels. The former Elfin Indians inhabited the area, using it for their “Peace Grounds” due to the vibrations that the region gives off. Nine thousand year old petroglyphs in the rocks appear to be spiritual direction finders, similar to those found at Stonehenge in England. There are numerous reports by folk who witnessed a ghostly woman wearing a white dress wandering the roads at night, as well as other forms of apparitions.

Scared yet? You might be. We recommend you do not go alone and that you let a friend know where you are going before you head out there.

To find this cache, you must find all of the escapee cache containers from the insane asylum that are hiding along the trail, each with a clue that works into the formula at the bottom. The trail is a punishing 6 mile round trip from recommended parking and you will experience a net 1000’ vertical climb. Expect to take 3+ hours on foot. Biking and hiking are OK, while all motorized travel is prohibited. Caches will mostly be located within an arm’s reach from the trail (respect Mother Nature, man!) but beware of the indigenous dangers typical of this temperate zone at all times: thorns, prickers, snakes, and poison oak.
