Geocache Description:

Situated on the lower slopes of the Lomond Hills are the woodlands known as Formonthills. This woodland occupies a commanding position overlooking the NW edge of Glenrothes, very popular amongst the local community.

Originally farmland this woodland was created in the mid 1990's, of which many of the 80,000 trees were planted by the locals. Evidence of old drystane field boundaries can still be seen. All the trees are native to Fife and include oak, ash, birch, cherry and Scots Pine. Wildflower seeds have been scattered which provide a floral haven for insects throught the summer months.

A variety of circular routes of differing lengths are possible, through a diverse landscape of young and mature woodland, mown glades, gorse thickets, wetlands and the grassland of Rhind Hill. On a clear day the view stretch across the Forth to Bass Rock and Berwick Law.

Over 5km of surfaced paths, mown grass paths and worn tracks lead through the woodland. Can be muddy in places when wet. Boardwalks and wee bridges take you over the wet areas.

If you wish to explore further there is a path leading up into the Lomond Hills Park to East Lomond, a trig point to surf on Rhind Hill, or link your walk with the nearby Coul Den Nature reserve.
